Chapter 13 - The Ghost of the Past “Mom?”

Clara whispered, the single word hanging in the crisp morning air like a fragile, breaking glass.

The woman stepped closer into the dim amber light of the cathedral doorway, a gentle, sorrowful smile touching her lips.

“Hello, my brave girl. I’m so sorry I had to stay hidden in the shadows for all these years.”

Elena Vance said softly, her voice trembling slightly as she reached out to gently touch the deep bruising along Clara’s cheek.

Richard stood frozen, staring at his wife as if she were a ghost materialized straight from a haunting dream, his eyes welling with long-suppressed tears.

“You… you survived the crash. Marcus told us you were taken, but…”

Richard choked out, pulling her into a desperate, crushing embrace that defied every rational thought in his mind.

“I didn't just survive, Richard. I spent the last five years building an underground coalition of whistleblowers, gathering every piece of digital evidence to dismantle the entire syndicate from the inside.”

Elena explained, pulling back to look at her bruised daughter with fierce, protective pride.

“And now, the Attorney General thinks he’s won because he sealed us in a bunker. But he just walked right into our final trap.”

Elena added, pulling a small, encrypted satellite transmitter from her coat pocket and holding it up for them to see.

Clara wiped a stray tear from her swollen eye, a sudden, powerful wave of strength washing over her tired body as she looked at her mother.

“The flash drive contains the master financial ledger. If we upload it to this satellite transmitter right now, it bypasses every domestic firewall and broadcasts live to every global news network simultaneously.”

Clara stated firmly, stepping forward to dock her encrypted drive directly into her mother's device.

“Do it, Clara. Let the whole world watch the empire crumble.”

Elena encouraged, pressing the final authorization sequence on the portable transmitter.

The tiny LED light on the device turned a brilliant, solid green, and a soft digital chime signaled that the master file had successfully transmitted globally.

Sirens suddenly wailed in the distance, growing louder by the second as a dozen unmarked federal vehicles swarmed the cathedral perimeter from every direction.

“They tracked the satellite ping. We have less than sixty seconds before the corrupt federal units storm this courtyard.”

Agent Miller warned, drawing her service weapon and checking the magazine clip with swift, practiced precision.

Elena smiled calmly, pressing a final button on her encrypted transmitter that triggered a loud, automated broadcast across every radio frequency in the city.
