Chapter 8 - The Red Alert

The flashing red emergency strobes painted the soaring stone pillars of the cathedral in crimson light as the deafening klaxon wailed.

“What is that? Did Arthur trigger a self-destruct sequence on the building?”

Agent Miller shouted over the ear-piercing alarm, hauling Marcus up to his feet by his handcuffs with rough urgency.

“Worse. The federal marshals stationed on the roof just radioed down. Arthur’s private chopper didn't take off; it was rigged to blow the moment he entered the helipad elevator.”

Marcus yelled back, his eyes widening in sudden, genuine terror as he looked toward the stained-glass windows.

“He didn't run to escape, Richard! He ran to destroy the master mainframe server housed in the sub-basement beneath this cathedral!”

Marcus warned, struggling against the steel cuffs as he realized the magnitude of the trap they had all walked into.

Clara’s heart pounded against her ribs like a trapped bird. She spun around to face the main altar, where the holographic screens were suddenly glitching violently. Thousands of leaked financial files, corporate extortion memos, and murder cover-ups were rapidly dissolving into lines of green cascading code.

“He’s wiping the mainframe remotely! If those files vanish, every single piece of evidence linking Arthur and the cartel disappears forever!”

Clara screamed, ignoring the blinding pain in her fractured cheek as she sprinted toward the hidden sub-basement access panel behind the altar.

“Clara, wait! It’s suicide to go down there alone while the override is active!”

Richard shouted, chasing after his daughter with surprising speed, his long coat billowing behind him in the rushing draft.

Agent Miller shoved Marcus into the secure custody of a backup federal marshal who had just rushed through the doors.

“Hold him secure! Vance, cover our flanks!”

Agent Miller commanded, drawing her sidearm as she sprinted after Richard and Clara toward the heavy iron-reinforced sub-basement door.

Clara slammed her bloody palm against the biometric fingerprint scanner beside the iron door, praying the system hadn't locked her out entirely. The red error light flashed furiously for three agonizing seconds before finally shifting to a solid, welcoming green. The heavy iron door popped open with a loud pneumatic hiss, releasing a thick cloud of white steam and the smell of burning copper wires.

“Watch your step. The override protocol releases a localized electrical surge designed to fry anyone tampering with the manual server racks.”

Marcus shouted from the main hall, his voice echoing faintly over the relentless wail of the emergency klaxon.

Clara didn't hesitate. She ducked beneath the venting steam and plunged headfirst into the pitch-black, smoke-filled stairwell leading deep into the earth.
