Chapter 8 - The Midnight Transfer

The digital clock on the mahogany desk glowed with cold green numbers: 11:45 PM.
Christian moved with terrifying speed, tearing open the yellowed envelope Marcus had provided. Inside lay a stack of encrypted flash drives and printed transaction logs bearing Julian’s digital signature. The numbers were staggering—hundreds of millions of dollars routed through offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands, backed by the proprietary code of Vance Global Logistics.
"He's routing the final packet right now," Christian said, his fingers flying across the secure terminal built into the desk. "If this transfer clears, our assets will be frozen by federal regulators within the hour for national security violations."
"I told you," Marcus murmured, leaning back in his chair with infuriating calm. "The boy was ambitious, but he was a blunt instrument in the hands of people much smarter than him. Clara was just the distraction. The real buyer is the Sterling Syndicate."
Elena stood up, pacing across the Persian rug despite the sharp twinge of pain in her lower back. "We have to stop it. Can you override the transfer from here, Christian?"
"No," Christian replied, his teeth clenched so hard his jaw ached. "The master key requires biometric authorization from the primary server room at the downtown headquarters. Julian locked me out of the admin panel yesterday using an emergency override clause."
Marcus chuckled, tapping his cane against the floor. "Which means someone has to physically go down there, bypass the security grid, and wipe the mainframe before the clock strikes twelve. And by my watch, you have exactly fourteen minutes."
Christian didn't hesitate. He grabbed his car keys and his heavy wool coat from the back of the chair. "Stay here, Elena. I'm taking the security detail and heading downtown."
"No," Elena said, her voice cutting through the room with unexpected steel. "I'm coming with you. Julian used my name to set up those offshore accounts. My biometric signature is the only override that can bypass the hardware firewall without triggering a total system purge."
Christian looked at her, seeing the fierce determination burning in her eyes. There was no time to argue. Every second wasted brought them closer to absolute corporate annihilation.
"Let's move," Christian commanded, turning toward the door.
As they rushed out into the grand hallway, the heavy grandfather clock by the entrance began to chime its deep, solemn warning for midnight. The storm outside had intensified, lashing rain against the massive glass windows of the estate as they piled back into the armored vehicle.

As the car roared down the driveway, the dashboard screen flashed an automated security alert from downtown headquarters: an unknown IP address had just initiated the final decryption sequence.
