Chapter 13 - The Longest Night

The rain continued to lash violently against the reinforced glass windows of the emergency stairwell, casting a pale, dreary light over the concrete landing. Christian scooped Elena into his arms, ignoring the soot and ash staining his black suit.

"We need an ambulance, now!" Christian shouted to the bodyguards, his voice echoing off the concrete walls with desperate urgency.

"The streets outside are completely flooded," the lead guard replied, speaking rapidly into his radio headset. "Paramedics are trapped three blocks away behind a multi-car pileup on the expressway. We can't wait for them."

Elena clutched Christian’s lapel, her knuckles white with strain. "We can't make it to the hospital... it's too far. Christian, please..."

"Look at me, Elena. Focus on my voice," Christian commanded softly, his usual stern exterior melting into a profound, tender anxiety. "You are safe. I've got you. We are going to get through this together."

They descended the remaining flights of stairs to the private parking garage below, where their armored town car was parked. The air in the subterranean garage was heavy and damp, smelling of exhaust fumes and wet asphalt. Gently, Christian laid Elena across the plush leather back seat of the vehicle, transforming the interior into a makeshift delivery room.

"Lock the doors," Christian instructed the bodyguards, who immediately took up defensive positions outside the vehicle. "Monitor the perimeter. No one gets near this car."

As Christian climbed into the back seat, rolling up his sleeves, Elena gripped his hands tightly. Her breathing was fast and shallow, her face bathed in a sheen of cold sweat.

"I'm scared, Christian," she whispered, a single tear cutting a clean path through the soot on her cheek. "What if Julian was right? What if I'm not strong enough to carry this legacy... to be a mother on my own?"

"Listen to me," Christian said fiercely, looking directly into her eyes. "You are the strongest person in this family. You walked away from Julian's abuse, you faced Arthur in that burning server room, and you protected the truth. You don't need a legacy, Elena—you are the legacy."

Outside the tinted windows of the car, the storm outside seemed to peak with a massive crack of thunder that rattled the concrete pillars of the garage.

Suddenly, the vehicle's headlights flickered, casting a strange, blinding glare across the wet pavement outside. Through the front windshield, a lone figure stepped out from the shadows of the concrete columns, walking slowly toward the car with an unmistakable, mocking gait.
