Chapter 4 - Shadows of the Past

The heavy silence in the penthouse hallway was punctuated only by the distant wail of a city siren far below. Julian’s fingers hovered over the signature line of the transfer document, his mind racing through desperate scenarios that all led to the same inevitable ruin. He looked at Elena, searching her eyes for a flicker of the old affection, but found only a profound, chilling emptiness.

"You never really loved our world, did you, Julian?" Elena asked softly, her voice steady despite her exhaustion. "You just wanted the name. You wanted the Vance family crest on your letterhead so people would forget where you came from."

"That's not true," Julian muttered defensively, pressing the tip of the pen against the paper. "I worked for everything I have. Your family just happened to own the ladder."

"No," Christian corrected, stepping forward so that his shadow completely enveloped Julian. "We built the ladder. You stole the rungs and tried to kick us off. Now, pay the toll."

With a ragged sigh that sounded like the deflating of a punctured tire, Julian scribbled his signature across the bottom of the three designated pages. The sound of the ink scratching against the heavy bond paper felt like a death knell for his ambitions. He dropped the pen, letting it roll across the marble until it hit the baseboard.

Christian retrieved the folder, handing it off to one of his bodyguards without opening it. "Smart choice. Though admittedly, the only choice you had left."

"What happens to me now?" Julian whispered, staring at his empty hands.

"You pack your bags," Christian replied coldly. "You leave this building within the hour. If you come within five miles of Elena or this child ever again, I won't send my lawyers. I'll handle it personally."

Elena gently touched Christian’s arm, signaling that it was time to leave. She did not want to spend another second breathing the same air as the man who had degraded and struck her. Christian nodded, wrapping a protective arm around her shoulders and guiding her toward the open doorway.

As they passed Clara, the blonde woman in the gold dress looked up with pleading eyes. "Elena, please. You know how Julian is. I was manipulated too. We were friends once."

Elena stopped for a fraction of a second, looking down at the woman who had helped orchestrate her emotional isolation. "We were never friends, Clara. You were just waiting for a vacancy."

They stepped out into the private elevator lobby, leaving the ruined apartment behind them. The stainless-steel doors slid shut, sealing Julian and Clara in their mutual misery. Inside the elevator, Christian let out a long, slow breath, the rigid tension finally leaving his broad shoulders.

"Are you alright?" Christian asked, gently brushing a stray lock of blonde hair from Elena's forehead.

May you like

"I will be," Elena whispered, resting her head against his chest. "Thank you for coming."
