Chapter 11 - The Darkest Hour

The thick steel security shutter locked into place with a definitive mechanical click, sealing the server room off from the rest of the floor. Inside, the only illumination came from the erratic, dying sparks of the short-circuited mainframe terminal, casting ghostly blue flashes across the room.
"Christian!" Elena called out again, stumbling backward as the heat from the smoking server racks began to rise.
"I'm right here, Elena," Christian’s voice came from the darkness, followed immediately by the dull thud of his shoulder slamming against the heavy steel shutter. The metal door didn't even budge; it was reinforced with military-grade titanium designed to withstand a bomb blast. "Stand back. Give me some room."
Christian raised his Sig Sauer and fired three rapid shots directly into the electronic locking mechanism of the shutter. Sparks showered down like fireworks, but the heavy steel plate remained stubbornly locked in place. Behind them, the fire suppression system hissed to life, spraying a dense, choking chemical fog into the room that instantly reduced visibility to zero.
"The ventilation shaft," one of the bodyguards shouted through the haze, coughing violently as he pointed a flashlight toward a narrow grate near the ceiling. "It leads to the external maintenance gantry. It's our only way out."
Christian grabbed the flashlight, sweeping the beam across the room until he found Elena huddled near the corner, shielding her face from the caustic fog. He rushed to her side, scooping her up into his arms despite her protests.
"Put me down, Christian, I can climb—" she started, gasping for breath.
"Not a chance," he interrupted, handing his weapon to the bodyguard and hoisting Elena toward the open maintenance shaft. "Get her through first. Make sure she reaches the emergency stairwell."
The bodyguards worked with frantic efficiency, boosting Elena up into the narrow metal tube just as the heat inside the server room reached unbearable levels. Christian hauled himself up behind them, slamming the mesh access grate shut just as a secondary explosion rocked the mainframe console below, turning the room into a blazing inferno.
They crawled through the cramped, dust-filled ventilation duct for what felt like hours, the sharp metal edges scraping against their clothes. Elena’s breathing came in ragged, painful gasps, every movement sending agonizing waves of pressure through her lower abdomen.
When they finally kicked open the maintenance exit leading to the emergency stairwell, the cool night air rushed in to greet them. But as they stumbled out onto the concrete landing, the heavy fire door at the bottom of the stairs slowly creaked open, revealing the silhouette of a man holding a heavy iron pipe.

It was Arthur, his face smudged with soot, blocking their only path to safety.
