Chapter 6 - The Uninvited Guest

The blinding headlights of the blocking sedan washed over the Vance estate entrance, casting long, distorted shadows across the stone pillars. Henderson stepped in front of Elena, raising his umbrella like a makeshift shield while the two bodyguards from the town car instantly drew their weapons, scanning the perimeter with practiced precision.

"Stay behind me," Christian ordered sharply, stepping out of the car and moving to Elena’s side with zero hesitation.

The door of the black sedan clicked open, and a figure stepped out into the rain. It wasn't Julian. The man wore an immaculate dark trench coat, his silver-streaked hair slicked back neatly despite the drizzle. He walked with a slow, deliberate cane, the metallic tip clicking rhythmically against the asphalt. As he stepped into the amber light of the veranda, Elena gasped softly.

"Uncle Marcus?" Elena breathed, her hand flying to her mouth.

Marcus Vance stopped at the base of the stone steps, leaning slightly on his ebony cane. He looked up at Christian and Elena with a wry, knowing smile that didn't quite reach his cold grey eyes.

"Good evening, children," Marcus said, his voice carrying the dry, rasping tone of an old predator who had survived decades of family infighting. "I see the prodigal daughter has returned to the fold, complete with dramatic flair and ruined men in her wake."

Christian’s jaw tightened, the muscles ticking along his jawline. "You have no business here, Marcus. You were stripped of your board seat five years ago."

"Business?" Marcus chuckled, a dry, humorless sound. "My dear nephew, family business is the only business that truly matters in this dynasty. I heard about Julian’s little meltdown at the penthouse. Quite messy. Quite unbecoming of a Vance partner, even an adopted one."

"If you're here to gloat or pick over the scraps of Julian’s failure, save your breath," Christian warned, taking another step forward, shielding Elena completely from view. "The estate is private property. Turn your car around, or I will have my security detail escort you out in handcuffs."

Marcus raised a gloved hand in a placating gesture, though his smile only widened. "Hasty, as always, Christian. Always ready to draw the sword before reading the map. I didn't come here for Julian. I came here for Elena."

Elena stepped out from behind Christian, her expression hardening despite her exhaustion. "Why would you want to see me, Uncle? You haven't spoken to me since my mother passed away."

"Because, my child," Marcus said softly, taking a slow step up the first stone stair, ignoring the warning glare of the bodyguards, "your mother left something in her private safe deposit box—something Christian's branch of the family has been hiding from you your entire life. And Julian’s sudden collapse is merely the first domino to fall."
