Chapter 1 - The Shattered Glass

The glaring overhead lights of the penthouse hallway cast harsh shadows against the imported Italian marble. Julian Vance stood over Elena, his face twisted into a mask of furious desperation. He adjusted his white button-down shirt with a trembling, manic energy, his dark hair disheveled from the argument. A few feet away, Clara stood frozen in her gold silk slip dress, her manicured hands covering her open mouth in absolute terror.

"Don't speak to her like that!" Julian roared, his voice bouncing off the high ceilings.

Elena shrank back against the textured wallpaper, her breath coming in ragged gasps. She wore a pristine white pleated maternity dress that draped heavily over her pronounced baby bump. Her blonde hair fell loosely across her shoulders, framing a face pale with trauma. She touched her stinging cheek with trembling fingers, her eyes wide with a mixture of betrayal and physical pain.

"You hit me," Elena whispered, the words trembling on her lips as she instinctively protected her stomach with both hands.

"I didn't mean to, and you know it," Julian hissed, taking a threatening half-step forward. "You provoked me with your endless demands."

Before Clara could step in to intervene, the heavy oak double doors at the end of the hall swung open with a resounding thud. Julian turned sharply at the sound of heavy footsteps. Through the open doorway strode a tall, broad-shouldered man in a sharp black suit with an open white shirt, flanked silently by two towering bodyguards in matching dark attire. The man’s eyes burned with a cold, terrifying intensity that instantly sucked the air from the room.

"Step away from our sister," the man in the black suit commanded, his voice a low, lethal baritone.

Julian spun around completely, his eyes flying wide open in sudden, overwhelming shock as he recognized the face of the intruder.

Clara clutched her hands tightly over her chest, trembling as the man in the black suit advanced on Julian.

"You just made the biggest mistake of your life," the man in the black suit said softly.

Julian swallowed hard, realizing too late who had just walked through that door.
