Chapter 10 - Family Betrayal

The red emergency lights pulsed rhythmically against the glass panels of the server racks, casting long, eerie shadows across the forty-second-floor room. Arthur stood casually by the smoking mainframe terminal, a thin, cynical smile playing on his lips as he tossed a secure flash drive from hand to hand.

"Arthur," Christian said, his voice dropping into a register so cold it made the air feel sub-zero. He kept his pistol trained steadily on his cousin's chest. "You've been embezzling from the logistics division for three years, and you thought you could blame it on Julian?"

"Julian was a convenient idiot," Arthur laughed softly, stepping away from the sparking console. "He wanted status; I wanted capital. When Clara came to us complaining about Elena’s impending inheritance, we simply accelerated our timeline. By morning, the board will vote you out for gross negligence, Christian, and I will assume control of the entire conglomerate."

Elena stepped into the server room, ignoring the acrid smell of burnt circuitry. She walked right past Christian, her blonde hair catching the red emergency glow as she confronted the man who had shared Thanksgiving dinners at their family table for over a decade.

"You sat in my father's house, ate his food, and smiled at me while you plotted to destroy everything my mother built," Elena whispered, her voice trembling with a quiet, devastating fury.

"Business is business, Elena," Arthur shrugged, showing no remorse. "Your mother was sentimental. She let emotion dictate strategy. Look where it got her—six feet under, and you wandering around a penthouse waiting for a man who didn't even want your child."

Arthur made a sudden, lightning-fast move toward a hidden wall panel, his fingers lunging for the master circuit breaker that would plunge the entire building into absolute darkness.

Before Christian could pull the trigger, one of the bodyguards lunged forward, tackling Arthur hard against the metal server racks. A shower of sparks erupted as the terminal short-circuited, filling the room with the sharp smell of ozone. Arthur grunted in pain as he hit the floor, the secure flash drive flying from his hand and sliding across the slick tile.

Elena didn't hesitate. Despite her advanced pregnancy, she dropped to her knees, scooping up the flash drive just as the red emergency lights flickered and died, plunging the entire floor into pitch blackness.

"Christian!" Elena called out, her voice cutting through the sudden gloom. "I have the drive!"

Before Christian could answer, a heavy steel security shutter slammed down over the doorway with a deafening crash, sealing them inside the burning server room while heavy footsteps echoed from the corridor outside.
