Chapter 7 - The Box in the Vault

The heavy oak doors of the estate library absorbed the howling wind outside, creating an island of suffocating quiet within the room. A massive fire crackled in the hearth, casting dancing golden light across the rows of leather-bound first editions. Marcus Vance sat in a wingback leather chair, resting his hands on the silver handle of his cane while Christian stood rigidly by the mahogany desk. Elena sat opposite them, her posture taut.
"Explain yourself, Marcus," Christian demanded, his voice dangerously low. "What safe deposit box?"
"Don't play the innocent protector with me, Christian," Marcus replied, his grey eyes gleaming with amusement. "You knew Sarah kept a separate account at the Zurich Trust. You knew it contained the documents proving that Julian’s tech company wasn't built on his own merit—it was funded using embezzled assets from Elena’s maternal trust."
Elena looked sharply between the two men. "What are you talking about? Julian always said he secured venture capital from an anonymous angel investor."
"The angel was your mother, my dear," Marcus said smoothly. "She wanted Julian to prove himself, so she funneled seed money through a shell company. But when she tried to pull the plug three years ago upon discovering his fraudulent practices... well, her sudden illness became terribly convenient, didn't it?"
Christian slammed his hand down on the desk, the loud crack echoing through the silent library. "That is a malicious lie, Marcus, and you know it. Mother died of natural causes, certified by three independent physicians."
"Certificates can be bought, Christian. Just like judges, just like politicians, and just like desperate young men in white shirts who think they can outsmart the family," Marcus retorted, leaning forward. He reached into his trench coat and pulled out a heavy, yellowed manila envelope sealed with red wax. He tossed it onto the coffee table between them. "Open it. It contains the medical transcripts and the financial ledger that Julian was blackmailing Clara with before he turned his aggression toward Elena."
Elena stared at the envelope. Her hands trembled as she reached out, her fingers brushing the thick paper.
"If this is true," Elena whispered, her voice cracking, "then Julian didn't just abuse me... he killed my mother's peace of mind."
"He did worse than that," Marcus said softly. "He made a deal with my former associates to sell our proprietary logistics software to our biggest corporate rival in Asia. The transfer was scheduled for midnight tonight. Unless you stop it right now, the entire Vance empire goes bankrupt by sunrise."

Christian stared at the red wax seal, the blood draining completely from his face as the terrifying magnitude of the betrayal finally clicked into place.
