Chapter 9 - The Gates of Wrath

The live feed from the front gate displayed a scene of escalating chaos. Elena stood in the center of the gravel driveway, her white veil completely torn and hanging loosely from her pinned-up brunette hair. Her face was flushed with anger, her eyes wide and manic as she gestured wildly toward the security cameras mounted on the stone pillars.
Beside her stood two imposing men who radiated the cold aura of high-priced corporate defense attorneys. Behind them, the local news van blazed its emergency lights, while a reporter hastily clipped a microphone to his lapel, ready to capture the unfolding drama live for the evening broadcast.
Julian watched the screen from the executive study, his hands resting flat on the console. His jaw was set so tight it ached. He pressed the intercom button to connect directly to the guard station at the front entrance.
"Chief Miller, what is the status at the gate?" Julian’s voice was calm, cutting through the static.
"Mr. Sterling," the head security guard replied promptly. "Ms. Vance and her legal representatives are demanding immediate re-entry to the estate, claiming she left personal property of significant value inside the main house. They're threatening to press charges of unlawful detainment and theft if we don't open the gates within two minutes."
Julian let out a cold, humorless laugh. "She wants to play hardball in front of the cameras? Fine. Let her play."
"Sir?" Miller asked, hesitation in his voice. "Should I let the attorneys in to retrieve her luggage?"
"No," Julian ordered sharply. "Lock the gates down completely. Activate the perimeter shields. And bring out the master log of her visitor badge entries from the past week—the one showing her unauthorized access to the private safe deposit room. Hand that exact physical folder to the lead attorney through the intercom slot, and tell them the police are already en route with an arrest warrant for corporate fraud."
On the monitor, Julian watched as Miller stepped out of the guard booth and approached the heavy iron bars. He handed a thick manila folder through the narrow security slot directly to Elena's lead lawyer.
Elena lunged forward, snatching the folder from the attorney's hands. She tore it open, her eyes scanning the printed pages of her own secret transactions. The color drained from her face once more, and she stumbled backward, her designer heels sinking slightly into the soft gravel.
The news reporter immediately noticed her reaction and signaled his cameraman to zoom in tight on her horrified expression.
"Miss Vance!" the reporter shouted through a megaphone from behind the gate. "Do these documents prove you attempted to defraud Julian Sterling of his real estate empire?"
May you like
Elena spun around to face the camera, opening her mouth to speak, but the words caught in her throat.
