Chapter 5 - Whispers in the Chapel

Down in the grand chapel, the murmur of the waiting crowd had grown into a restless buzz. Rows of floral arrangements, costing more than most people earned in a year, sat pristine and untouched under the vaulted ceilings. Guests whispered behind gloved hands, checking their watches and exchanging confused glances as the twenty-minute delay stretched toward thirty.
Sarah and Chloe walked down the carpeted aisle, slipping quietly into the back pews to avoid the direct gaze of the bewildered attendees. They had left their bridesmaid bouquets on a side table, their light green dresses standing out sharply against the traditional dark wood of the pews.
In the front row, Elena’s mother, Mrs. Vance, sat rigid with anxiety, clutching a pearl-handled handbag so tightly her knuckles were white. As Sarah slipped into the pew beside her, Mrs. Vance turned with a forced, tight smile.
"Where are they?" Mrs. Vance whispered harshly. "The caterers are asking if they should delay the reception dinner. This is entirely unprofessional."
Sarah looked at the older woman with deep pity. For months, Mrs. Vance had bragged to all her society friends about her daughter marrying into immense wealth, pushing Elena into the union despite numerous red flags.
"There isn't going to be a reception, Mrs. Vance," Sarah said quietly, leaning close so the surrounding guests wouldn't overhear.
Mrs. Vance frowned, her eyes flashing with irritation. "Don't be ridiculous. Julian just invested heavily in our family's foundation last week. A wedding of this magnitude doesn't just get canceled because of cold feet."
"It wasn't cold feet," Chloe chimed in, her voice trembling slightly. "Elena tried to steal Julian's property. She forged transfer documents and was caught red-handed by Julian’s daughter."
The color drained from Mrs. Vance’s face, leaving her looking remarkably like her daughter had upstairs. "That’s impossible," she stammered. "Elena wouldn't be so foolish. She had everything secured."
"She had nothing secured except her own greed," Sarah said firmly, opening her small clutch to retrieve her car keys. "Julian has the audio recordings, the digital signatures, and the police are already involved. We are leaving right now, and I suggest you find a way to get home quietly before the reporters outside catch wind of what really happened."
Mrs. Vance sat frozen in her seat, staring blindly at the flower-adorned altar as the devastating reality of their social ruin began to settle in.

Suddenly, the heavy oak chapel doors at the back swung wide open, revealing a figure standing in the threshold holding a professional camera.
