Chapter 8 - A Child's Warning

Lily stood in the doorway, clutching a small, worn sketchbook against her chest. Her blond hair was tied back with a simple blue ribbon, and her eyes, so remarkably like her late mother’s, searched Julian’s face with quiet concern.
Julian’s stern expression instantly melted away, replaced by a deep, tender warmth. He stood up from the desk and walked around to meet her, kneeling down to her eye level.
"Hey, sweetheart," Julian said softly, resting a hand gently on her shoulder. "Are you doing okay? Do you want to go down to the gardens for some fresh air?"
Lily shook her head, stepping closer into his embrace. She held out a crayon drawing she had been working on in the adjoining room. It depicted a tall stone house surrounded by blooming flowers, with two stick figures holding hands beneath a bright yellow sun. In the corner of the paper, a small, dark scribbled shape was crossed out with a thick red X.
"I drew our house," Lily whispered, her voice barely audible. "And I crossed out the bad lady so she can't come back."
Julian swallowed the sudden lump in his throat. He took the drawing from her small hands, admiring the innocent yet fierce determination reflected in the crayon strokes. "You did a wonderful job, Lily. And I promise you, nobody is ever going to take this home away from us. You kept us safe today."
"Are the police going to take her away?" Lily asked, looking up with wide, serious eyes.
"People have to face the consequences of the choices they make," Julian explained gently, choosing his words with care. "When someone tries to hurt our family, we have to stand our ground. But you don't need to worry about her anymore. She's leaving."
Before Julian could say more, a sharp chime echoed from the intercom system mounted on the study wall. Marcus’s voice crackled through the speaker, urgent and strained.
"Julian, you need to look at the front security monitor right now. Elena hasn't left the estate. She’s down at the main gate, and she brought reinforcements."
Julian stood up immediately, taking Lily’s hand. "Stay right here in the study, sweetheart. Lock the inner door, and don't open it for anyone except me or Marcus."
He strode quickly over to the wall-mounted console and pressed a button to activate the live feed from the property's massive wrought-iron front gates.

On the high-definition screen, Elena was standing defiantly in her ruined wedding gown, flanked by two aggressive-looking men in sharp suits holding briefcases. Next to them stood a local television news van, its satellite dish pointed directly at the sky.
