Chapter 4 - The Empty Corridor

The heavy oak door of the bridal room clicked shut behind Elena with a finality that echoed in her soul. She stood alone in the dimly lit corridor, the heavy silk of her wedding gown pooling around her designer heels like a defeated flag. The sounds of murmuring guests drifted up from the courtyard below, completely unaware that the grand spectacle they had waited hours to witness had just dissolved into thin air.

Elena clutched her bare arms, the cool draft from the high windows sending a shiver down her spine. Her mind raced frantically, calculating losses, weighing options, and searching for any loophole she could exploit. The apartment downtown was leased under her name, but the rent was three months overdue. Her credit cards were already maxed out, relying entirely on the assumption that Julian’s fortune would absorb her mounting liabilities by midnight.

Footsteps approached from around the corner, sharp and purposeful. It was Marcus, Julian’s long-time attorney and financial advisor, dressed in a sharp charcoal suit that matched the gravity of the morning. He stopped short upon seeing Elena standing outside the bridal suite in her full wedding regalia.

"Elena," Marcus said, his voice entirely devoid of its usual warm professionalism. "I was just heading in to see Julian."

"Marcus, you have to listen to me," Elena hissed, stepping forward and grabbing the sleeve of his jacket. Desperation made her voice frantic. "Julian has manipulated this entire situation. He set me up. He lured me into a false sense of security, let me sign those papers, and then used his daughter as a pawn to sabotage the ceremony."

Marcus gently but firmly pulled his arm away, adjusting his cuff links with deliberate slowness. "I drafted those prenuptial agreements, Elena. I also reviewed the asset transfer logs flagged by our security systems this morning. The only person attempting a manipulation here was you."

Elena’s eyes narrowed. "You've been helping him hide assets, haven't you? You're protecting his empire while he leaves me with nothing!"

"Julian’s empire is entirely legitimate, earned through decades of hard work," Marcus replied coldly. "And as for your situation, you brought every single piece of this downfall upon yourself. The police are already reviewing the digital paper trail you so carelessly left on the network servers."

Before Elena could formulate a counterattack, the double doors at the end of the corridor swung open. Julian emerged, holding Lily’s small hand. The little girl looked up at her father, completely calm now that the storm had passed. Julian didn't even glance in Elena’s direction as he walked past her toward the private elevator.

"Julian!" Elena cried out, taking a step to follow them.

Marcus stepped directly into her path, blocking her way with an impassive expression. "It’s over, Elena. Walk away now while you still have your dignity."
