Chapter 10 - The Turning Tide

The flashing camera lights from the news van painted strobing shadows across Elena’s frantic face as she stared directly into the lens. For a fleeting second, the armor of her pride completely cracked, revealing the raw, desperate panic of a woman who had gambled everything and lost it all in a single afternoon.

Her lead attorney quickly stepped in front of her, raising a hand to block the camera lens. "No comment at this time. All inquiries must be directed to our firm."

"Too late for no comments," a deep, authoritative voice boomed from behind the news crew.

Two unmarked police cruisers with their emergency lights spinning silently pulled up directly behind the news van, blocking any chance of a quick retreat. Four uniformed officers stepped out briskly, moving with practiced efficiency toward the front gates. The lead officer, a tall detective with a stern expression, bypassed the lawyers entirely and walked straight up to the iron bars.

"Elena Vance?" the detective asked, his voice carrying clearly across the quiet courtyard.

Elena swallowed hard, her shoulders sagging under the weight of the moment. She didn't answer, but the terrified look in her eyes was all the confirmation the authorities needed.

The detective signaled the guard to open the small pedestrian gate. "Step away from the attorneys, please. You are being placed under arrest for corporate fraud, forgery, and grand larceny."

Gasps erupted from the small crew of journalists. The camera operator frantically adjusted his focus, capturing every single detail as the heavy steel gate clicked open and the officers stepped through to execute the warrant.

Up in the executive study, Julian watched the monitor with a heavy, unreadable expression. There was no joy in seeing her fall, only a profound sense of closure. The threat to his home, to his daughter, and to his peace of mind had finally been neutralized.

The door behind him creaked open softly. Julian turned to see Lily standing there, holding her crayon drawing tightly against her chest. She walked over to the desk and looked up at the monitor, watching the police escort Elena away in handcuffs.

"Is she gone for good, Daddy?" Lily asked quietly, her voice devoid of fear, filled only with curious innocence.

Julian knelt down, wrapping his arms around her and pulling her close. He kissed the top of her head, breathing in the scent of baby shampoo and fresh air.

"Yes, sweetheart," Julian whispered softly against her hair. "She’s gone. We're safe now."

Suddenly, a loud, urgent knock echoed from the front entrance of the mansion downstairs, followed by the sound of heavy footsteps rushing up the grand staircase.
