Chapter 3 - Shadows in the Blueprint

Julian pocketed the phone, his gaze piercing through Elena’s desperate facade. The harsh reality of what was happening began to settle over the room like a heavy shroud.

"You underestimated everyone in this house, Elena," Julian said steadily. "You assumed Lily was just a prop for the ceremony, a cute little accessory to make our wedding pictures look perfect for the society columns. You never bothered to actually see her."

Lily lifted her tear-stained face from her father's shoulder, her big blue eyes locking onto Elena with a maturity far beyond her seven years. "I heard you talking on the phone in the library last night," Lily said clearly. "You told someone that as soon as you married my daddy, you were going to sell our house and send me away to boarding school."

Elena felt the blood rush to her ears. The walls of the bridal room seemed to close in. "You're just a child. You didn't understand what you were hearing."

"I understood enough," Lily retorted, her voice steady and brave. "My mom built this house before she passed away. Daddy promised her he would always keep me safe here. I wasn't going to let you take it away."

Sarah stepped between Elena and the father-daughter duo, her expression hardened with disappointment. "Elena, is this true? Did you really plan to sell Julian's family home?"

"Stay out of this, Sarah!" Elena snapped, her veneer of sophistication completely shattered. "You don't know the sacrifices I've made to get to this point. Julian led me to believe he was worth hundreds of millions. He flaunted his wealth, bought me this dress, paraded me in front of the board of directors. But the truth is, he’s been liquidating everything to hide it from me!"

"Because I found out about your mounting debts," Julian countered, his tone unwavering. "The gambling losses, the fake charities, the lawsuits pending against your name in three different states. I was willing to help you settle them out of my own pocket, Elena. I offered you a clean slate, a genuine partnership. But your greed was a bottomless pit."

Chloe shook her head slowly, her eyes welling with sympathetic tears for the young girl. "We came here to celebrate a union, not a heist. Elena, how could you?"

Elena looked around the room, realizing she had completely lost the narrative. The bridesmaids weren't on her side anymore; they were staring at her with undisguised disgust.

"Get out," Julian said quietly, pointing toward the heavy wooden door that led out to the grand hallway. "The guests will be told the wedding is canceled due to unforeseen circumstances. Your luggage is already in your car in the alley. Leave now before I involve the authorities."

Elena stood her ground for a long, agonizing moment, her pride fighting a losing battle against the cold, hard evidence on that phone screen.
