Chapter 7 - Unraveling the Web

Back in the executive study on the top floor of the estate, Julian sat behind a massive mahogany desk, the soft glow of a desk lamp illuminating the financial portfolios spread out before him. The room was soundproofed, blocking out the distant commotion echoing from the chapel below.
Marcus stood across from him, sliding a thick file containing printed chat logs and email threads across the polished wood.
"The digital forensics team has fully extracted the backup from Elena’s personal tablet," Marcus reported, adjusting his glasses. "It goes back much further than we initially realized. This wasn't a spur-of-the-moment decision made during yesterday's document signing. She has been systematically laying the groundwork to siphon your capital for the past eight months."
Julian turned a page, his eyes scanning the detailed breakdown of shell companies and fake charities that Elena had set up under pseudonyms. A muscle ticked in his jaw. He had trusted her completely, lowering every guard he had built up after the tragic loss of his first wife. He had believed her smiles were genuine, her affection authentic.
"She used my love for Lily as leverage," Julian said quietly, his voice dangerously restrained. "She made me feel guilty for working late, claiming I was neglecting my daughter, all so she could isolate us and manage the estate transactions undisturbed."
"People driven by desperation and entitlement rarely change their tactics," Marcus noted grimly. "The question is, what do we do with all of this now? Do we hand the entire file over to the district attorney and let the legal system handle her, or do we offer a quiet settlement to avoid the public spectacle?"
Julian closed the file with a soft thud. He thought of Lily, currently drawing pictures in the adjoining room, blissfully unaware of the deeper financial wars being fought on her behalf. She had saved their home today with a single smartphone screen. She deserved absolute peace, free from the tabloid frenzy that Liam Vance and his ilk were eager to whip up.
"We don't protect Elena anymore," Julian said, his voice resolute. "Hand the complete dossier to the prosecutor's office immediately. But ensure Lily's name and image are entirely redacted from all public legal filings. I want her shielded from the fallout completely."
Marcus nodded respectfully, gathering the papers back into the leather binder. "Consider it done, Julian. The authorities will execute the warrant before the sun sets."

As Marcus turned to leave the study, a soft knock sounded at the heavy oak door. Before Julian could answer, the handle slowly turned and the door creaked open.
