Chapter 7 - The Ten-Minute Countdown The red numbers on the digital screen blinked rhythmically: 09:59... 09:58...

Chloe stared at the glowing digits, her breath frosting slightly in the unheated corridor. The biometric scanner had rejected her fingerprint, meaning her mother hadn't programmed her clearance into this sub-level system.

Only two people possessed the master override code: Richard, currently sitting in the back of a police cruiser, and Eleanor, who was lying cold on a steel table miles away.

"Miss Vance?" Officer Davies called out from down the hall, his footsteps echoing as he approached with Victoria in tow.

"We need to clear the property. The precinct wants both of you at booking before the shift change."

"Wait," Chloe said, not turning around.

"Look at this."

Davies guided Victoria around the corner, his flashlight beam cutting through the gloom to illuminate the steel door and the blinking red countdown timer.

Victoria stopped crying instantly. Her tear-streaked face hardened as she stared at the screen, a strange, grim realization dawning in her dark eyes.

"You shouldn't have triggered that," Victoria whispered, her voice losing its hysterical edge and dropping into a flat, terrified monotone.

"What is it?" Davies demanded, resting his hand on his holstered firearm.

"What's behind that door?"

"It’s not a vault for money," Victoria muttered, staring at the numbers ticking down: 08:42... 08:41...

"It’s the facility ledger. Every transaction, every shell company, every piece of blackmail your father accumulated over twenty years of corporate extortion. And if that timer hits zero without the master code..."

"What happens?" Chloe demanded, grabbing Victoria by the sleeve of her silk shirt.

"What happens when it hits zero?!"

"The off-site secure server dumps the encrypted hard drives directly to the federal grand jury pool," Victoria said, a hysterical laugh bubbling up in her throat.

"Your father built a fail-safe to protect himself from his business associates. If he went down, everything he owned—including this house, including your trust—gets seized by the federal government under the RICO act."

Chloe stared at the screen. 07:15... 07:14...

She had less than seven minutes to save her inheritance, her home, and whatever was left of her family’s legacy.

"There has to be a manual override," Chloe said frantically, searching the paneling around the doorframe.

"My mother wouldn't build a trap that destroys everything she worked for."

"She didn't build it to destroy us," a cold, computerized voice suddenly echoed from the intercom speaker mounted above the keypad.

Both Chloe and Victoria jumped.

The speaker crackled with static, and then a recorded voice began to speak—not Eleanor’s voice, and not Richard’s, but a cold, synthetic text-to-speech program reading out a final set of instructions.

“If you are listening, the primary lockout has been engaged. To reset the timer and access the vault, the surviving heir must answer a single security question derived from the family's true history.”

The screen shifted, replacing the countdown numbers with a single typed question: “Where did Richard hide the ledger from the summer of 2004?”

Chloe froze, her mind racing back to a summer she had spent entirely away at camp, while her parents stayed behind in the sprawling, silent house.
