Chapter 2 - Shadows Across the Marble

The silence that followed Chloe’s question was heavy and suffocating, broken only by the distant hum of the mansion’s climate control system.
Richard did not answer immediately. He stopped two paces away from Chloe, his gaze dropping briefly to her trembling hands before rising to meet her accusatory stare.
There was no warmth in his eyes, only a calculated assessment that chilled Chloe to her core.
Behind him, Victoria shifted her weight, her black silk shirt rustling softly as she smoothed the front of her beige trousers.
"Don't be melodramatic, Chloe," Richard said finally, his voice unnervingly calm.
"Your mother’s passing has strained your nerves. Victoria is simply trying to maintain order during a difficult transition."
"Order?" Chloe’s voice rose, a sharp edge of disbelief cutting through her tears.
"She just threw my luggage onto the gravel drive and told me I was trespassing in my own childhood home! Mom’s body isn't even cold at the county morgue, and you're letting this woman act like the lady of the manor?"
Victoria stepped forward, her expression hardening into one of aggrieved innocence.
"Someone had to take charge, Richard. You were sequestered in your study, dealing with the legal fallout, while she was wandering around the estate in a state of hysterics. I only acted in the best interest of this household."
"You don't live here!" Chloe screamed, lunging forward, though Richard immediately stepped into her path, his broad shoulder acting as an impassable wall.
"Calm down, Chloe," Richard repeated, his tone dropping into a dangerous register that brooked no argument.
"Victoria has every right to be here. In fact, you need to understand that things have changed. Your mother and I signed revised documents prior to her sudden decline."
Chloe stopped struggling against his blockade. The fight drained out of her limbs, replaced by a cold, hollow dread.
"Revised documents?" she whispered, staring at her father as if he were a stranger.
"What are you talking about?"
Richard sighed, running a hand over his short dark beard. He didn't look guilty; he looked inconvenienced.
"The estate, the holdings, the trust—they are no longer structured the way you think they are. Victoria is an equity partner in our corporate ventures now, and consequently, she holds legal residency rights on this property."
"Equity partner?" Chloe let out a dry, humorless laugh that ended in a sob.
"Mom hated her! Everyone in the district knows Victoria was just your paralegal, your mistress tucked away in the downtown office! Mom would never sign over the house to her!"
"Your mother was heavily medicated and legally compromised during her final weeks," Victoria interjected smoothly, a dangerous glint in her dark eyes.
"The probate court will validate the transfer by morning."
Chloe stared between the two of them, the horrifying puzzle pieces clicking into place. She backed away toward the heavy double doors, her hand brushing the cold brass handle.
"You killed her," Chloe whispered, the accusation hanging heavy and dark in the foyer.

Richard’s face went entirely blank, his eyes narrowing into cold slits as he took a slow step toward her.
