Chapter 10 - The Breach in the Library

The sharp, deafening crash of shattering glass echoed through the sprawling library, followed by the heavy thud of combat boots hitting the Persian rug.

"Nobody move!" the masked intruder barked, his voice distorted by a tactical comms unit as he swept the barrel of his rifle across the room, locking instantly onto Officer Davies.

Davies reacted with professional speed, dropping into a defensive crouch and drawing his sidearm, but before he could squeeze off a round, a second operative vaulted through the broken window, slamming the butt of his weapon against Davies’ shoulder and sending the officer crashing hard into a mahogany bookshelf.

Davies groaned, his service pistol skidding across the polished floorboards and coming to rest near Victoria’s high heels.

Victoria let out a shrill scream, dropping to her knees and covering her head with her hands as she curled into a tight ball against the base of the desk.

Chloe froze, the heavy leather ledger still clutched tightly in her hands. Her heart pounded in her throat as the first intruder stepped closer, the moonlight catching the dark, expressionless composite material of his tactical helmet.

"Hand over the book, Miss Vance," the operative commanded, his voice entirely flat and mechanical.

"Orders of the primary stakeholder."

"Who?" Chloe demanded, her voice shaking but defiant as she backed away toward the towering bookshelves.

"Who sent you? Richard is already in custody!"

The operative let out a cold, humorless chuckle.

"Mr. Vance is a liability, but he isn't the head of this syndicate. The board operates independently of any single executive."

The operative reached out a gloved hand, stepping forward to snatch the ledger from her grip.

Instead of complying, Chloe hauled back and threw the heavy, leather-bound book directly into the operative’s face, catching him off guard.

The thick spine struck the composite helmet with a dull thud, staggering the man backward just enough for Chloe to turn and sprint toward the concealed service door hidden behind the rolling library ladder.

"Catch her!" the second operative roared, lunging forward with unnatural speed.

Chloe threw open the service door just as a gloved hand grazed the fabric of her grey knit sweater, tumbling headfirst down a dark, narrow flight of concrete stairs that descended deep into the bowels of the estate’s old foundation.

The heavy steel door slammed shut behind her automatically with a deafening, echoing echo, plunging her into absolute, suffocating darkness.
