Chapter 1 - The Threshold of Betrayal

The heavy wooden double doors slammed shut with a concussive thud that rattled the glass panes framing the grand entryway.
Outside, the cold wind bit into Chloe’s skin through the thin fabric of her grey knit sweater. Her breath hitched in her throat, coming in ragged, shallow gasps as she clutched her small shoulder bag like a lifeline.
Inside the mansion, the pristine white marble floors seemed to mock her, reflecting the distorted image of her tear-stained face.
Victoria stood before her, her posture rigidly triumphant. The woman’s black silk button-down shirt caught the harsh light of the crystal chandelier, gleaming like oil.
Victoria adjusted the heavy gold earrings dangling from her lobes, her dark eyes narrowing with a predatory chill that had haunted Chloe’s nightmares for months.
"Your mother is gone!" Victoria snarled, her voice dripping with venom as she stepped closer, invading Chloe’s personal space.
"Now this is my house!"
"You're lying," Chloe choked out, her voice trembling violently as fresh tears spilled over her lashes.
"My mother just passed away this morning! You can't just throw me out like trash!"
"Watch me," Victoria retorted, her mouth curling into a cruel, triumphant smirk.
"Get out! You don’t belong here anymore!"
Chloe raised her hands, pressing her palms against her face as a sob ripped through her chest. The sheer injustice of the moment crushed the air from her lungs.
"This was my mother’s home!" she cried out into the cavernous hall, her knees threatening to buckle beneath her.
"What is the meaning of this commotion?" a deep, resonant voice boomed from above.
Chloe dropped her hands, her tear-blurred vision shifting upward. Descending the sweeping glass staircase was Richard, his tailored navy blue suit immaculate, his short dark hair and trimmed beard framing a face carved from stone.
His eyes swept over the scene with calculated detachment.
Richard paused on the second-to-last step, towering over them both with an air of absolute authority.
"Thomas, what are you doing to my daughter?" Richard demanded sternly, his gaze locking onto Victoria, whose birth name he used with a chilling familiarity that sent a shiver down Chloe’s spine.
Victoria flinched momentarily, her defensive mask slipping to reveal a flash of genuine panic before she quickly hardened her features.
Chloe turned sharply toward Richard as he took the final steps toward her, while Victoria stepped back, folding her arms defensively across her chest.
Chloe’s heart pounded against her ribs like a trapped bird as she looked into the cold, inscrutable eyes of the man she had called father her entire life.
"She was locking me out," Chloe whispered, her voice cracking as she stared up at the man approaching her.

"Or you both were planning this the entire time. Tell me the truth, Dad. What were you and Victoria doing in this house before I got back?"
