Chapter 12 - The Lake House Secret

The drainage tunnel was narrow, slick with moss, and barely tall enough for Chloe to run at a half-crouch without scraping her shoulders against the corrugated steel ceiling.
Behind her, the shouted commands of the tactical operatives echoed off the curved walls, amplified by the confined space like shots fired inside a barrel.
"She went toward the drainage junction!" a harsh voice barked over the comms channel.
"Cut off the north exit by the boathouse!"
Chloe’s lungs burned with every ragged breath she drew. The damp air tore at her throat, but she forced her legs to move faster, her white sneakers splashing through the shallow runoff water pooling along the center trench.
Her phone screen flickered and died completely, plunging the tunnel into absolute, velvety darkness.
Relying entirely on touch, she kept her right hand pressed flat against the cold corrugated wall, guiding her through the winding twists of the subterranean pipe.
After what felt like hours of agonizing flight, a faint square of silver moonlight appeared ahead of her at the end of the tunnel, framing the heavy iron safety grate that blocked the exit.
Chloe scrambled forward, sliding the last few feet through the mud until she slammed hard against the rusted iron bars of the grate.
She grabbed the vertical bars with both hands, shaking them with all her remaining strength. The hinges were old and corroded, but stubborn.
Heavy footfalls echoed rapidly down the tunnel behind her, growing louder by the second.
"Got you now, girl," a cold voice sneered from the darkness just twenty feet back.
With a final, desperate surge of adrenaline, Chloe braced her feet against the concrete frame and pulled backward with every ounce of muscle she possessed.
With a loud, metallic shriek of tearing bolts, the entire iron grate sheared away from the masonry wall, sending Chloe tumbling backward out into the cool night air.
She landed hard on the grassy bank of the estate’s private lake, clutching the leather ledger to her chest as the icy night wind hit her damp clothes.

She rolled over, scrambling to her feet, but froze in absolute horror as the beam of a high-powered tactical flashlight swept across the grass from the direction of the boathouse, pinning her in its blinding glare.
