Chapter 4 - An Unwelcome Arrival

The headlights of the black sedan washed over the portico, casting long, distorted shadows against the limestone pillars.

Chloe stood frozen in the open doorway, her hand still gripping the brass handle, as the tall man in the rumpled trench coat strode purposefully toward the steps.

He had sharp, weathered features and silver-streaked hair tucked beneath a damp cap.

As he reached the top of the stairs, his eyes flicked past Chloe to fix upon Richard, who stood rigidly in the center of the foyer.

"Richard Vance?" the man asked, his voice gravelly and devoid of warmth as he pulled a metal badge from his inner coat pocket.

"Detective Miller, County Homicide."

Victoria’s breath caught audibly in the quiet air behind Richard. The confident, dominant posture she had maintained all afternoon dissolved instantly, replaced by a rigid stiffness as she gripped the collar of her black silk shirt.

Richard, however, did not blink. He squared his shoulders, his expression remaining a mask of controlled authority.

"Detective," Richard said, his voice level and steady.

"To what do I owe this intrusion? As you can see, we are in the middle of a private family mourning period."

Detective Miller didn't step inside. Instead, he flicked his gaze from Richard to Victoria, and finally to Chloe, who was shivering in the doorway.

"We received an anonymous tip regarding the sudden admittance of Eleanor Vance to St. Jude’s Emergency Room early Tuesday morning," Miller said, flipping open the manila folder.

"The attending physician flagged several anomalies in her toxicology screen prior to her transfer to the county morgue."

Chloe felt the ground sway beneath her feet. She stepped back into the foyer, ignoring the sharp glare Victoria shot her.

"Anomalies?" Chloe echoed, her voice barely a whisper.

"What kind of anomalies?"

Detective Miller looked directly at Chloe, his eyes softening slightly with professional sympathy.

"Traces of a synthetic paralytic, Miss Vance. The same compound used in high-end veterinary anesthesia. It mimics the symptoms of a massive stroke while keeping the patient fully conscious and unable to cry out."

Richard’s hand twitched toward his suit pocket, a microscopic movement, but Miller caught it instantly.

"Step away from the threshold, Mr. Vance," Miller commanded, raising his voice as two uniformed officers materialized out of the darkness behind him, their boots crunching on the gravel drive.

"You're both coming down to the station for questioning regarding the suspicious death of Eleanor Vance."

Victoria let out a sharp gasp, her composure shattering entirely as she pointed a trembling finger at Chloe.

"She did it!" Victoria shrieked, her voice losing its polished veneer and rising into a panicked wail.

"She was desperate for her trust fund! She resented her mother’s control!"

Detective Miller looked from Victoria to Richard, then slowly turned his gaze back to Chloe, whose jaw dropped in absolute shock at the sudden, desperate betrayal.

Before Miller could speak, the interior house phone began to ring from the study down the hall, its shrill tone echoing through the silent mansion like an alarm bell.
