Chapter 13 - The True Mastermind

The blinding white beam of the tactical flashlight pinned Chloe against the muddy bank of the lake like an insect under a microscope.

She raised a trembling hand to shield her eyes, squinting into the glare as heavy boots crunched across the gravel path leading down from the boathouse.

"Well, well, well," a smooth, cultured voice cut through the night air, carrying an eerie tone of polite familiarity that made Chloe’s blood run cold.

"I always knew Eleanor raised a fighter. But crashing through my father’s security grid? That was remarkably short-sighted, my dear."

The figure stepped out of the shadows, flanked by the two masked tactical operatives.

As he stepped into the light of the flashlight, Chloe’s breath caught permanently in her throat.

It wasn't a stranger. It was Julian Vance—her father’s younger brother, the smiling, philanthropic uncle who lived in Geneva and supposedly had nothing to do with the family’s domestic or corporate affairs.

"Uncle Julian?" Chloe whispered, her voice trembling violently as the horrifying truth finally fell into place.

"You... you own the syndicate. Richard was just your puppet all along."

Julian smiled, a warm, charismatic expression that didn't reach his cold, calculating eyes. He wore a cashmere overcoat over a tailored suit, looking as though he were attending an evening opera rather than orchestrating a violent corporate takeover.

"Richard is a weak-willed fool who let his ambition cloud his judgment," Julian corrected gently, stepping closer while his operatives kept their rifles leveled at Chloe.

"He thought he was running the empire, but every dollar he laundered passed through my accounts in Zurich. And your mother... well, Eleanor was brilliant, but she simply refused to understand the modern economic realities of our family portfolio."

"You killed her," Chloe said, her voice rising with a mixture of grief and pure, unadulterated rage.

"You and Richard poisoned her just like you ruined my grandfather!"

Julian sighed, shaking his head with feigned disappointment.

"We merely accelerated an inevitable medical outcome, Chloe. Hypertension is a terrible affliction. Now, be a good niece and hand over the ledger before my men lose their patience."

Chloe backed away toward the edge of the dark, freezing lake water, clutching the cracked leather book against her chest with both arms.

"Never," she whispered.

Julian’s smile vanished instantly, replaced by a dark, predatory scowl as he nodded to the operatives flanking him.

"Take it from her," Julian ordered coldly.

"And make sure she joins her mother at the bottom of the lake."
