Chapter 11 - The Sub-Level Labyrinth

The air in the subterranean corridor was cold, damp, and thick with the scent of stagnant water and old concrete.

Chloe scrambled to her feet in the pitch blackness, wincing as a sharp pain flared in her left shoulder where she had slammed against the rough wall during her fall.

She clutched the ledger tightly in her right arm, her fingers tracing the cracked leather binding to ensure she hadn't dropped it.

Above her, muffled by thick concrete and reinforced steel, came the heavy thud of boots slamming against the service door, accompanied by the muffled sound of an electronic cutting torch hissing as it bit into the locking mechanism.

They were cutting through the door. She had minutes—maybe seconds—before they breached the lower level.

Chloe reached into the pocket of her jeans, pulling out her small smartphone.

She tapped the screen, wincing as the bright white light illuminated her tear-streaked face and grazed knuckles.

Battery: 14%. Signal: Zero bars.

"Think," she whispered to herself, her breath pluming in the frigid air as she began to feel along the damp concrete wall for a light switch or an emergency exit tunnel.

Her mother had designed this entire foundation during the Cold War era scare of the late 1980s, when the estate was first built by her grandfather.

There had to be an egress route leading away from the mansion—a drainage culvert or a utility tunnel connecting to the old pump house down by the lake.

A sharp spark illuminated the upper corner of the heavy steel door behind her as the cutting torch finally breached the top seal, sending a cascade of white-hot metal slag cascading onto the concrete floor.

Panic surged through Chloe’s veins. She broke into a blind run down the narrow corridor, her footsteps splashing in puddles of standing water.

The hallway branched off into three distinct directions, marked only by faded brass plaques on the wall: Utilities, Archives, and Drainage.

She paused at the intersection, her phone battery indicator flashing red at 9%.

From down the dark, sloping tunnel marked Drainage, a faint, cool current of fresh night air brushed against her cheek, carrying the distant scent of pine and lake water.

She turned down the drainage tunnel just as the steel door behind her blew inward with a concussive blast of compressed air and smoke, and heavy tactical boots began descending the concrete steps behind her in hot pursuit.
