Chapter 5 - The Toll of the Bell

The phone continued to ring, a rhythmic, mechanical shriek that cut through the heavy tension in the foyer like a razor blade.
Detective Miller didn’t flinch, but his hand hovered near his holster as he gestured for one of the uniformed officers to secure the perimeter.
"Nobody moves," Miller instructed, his gaze fixed on Richard and Victoria.
"Officer Davies, check the landline. Make sure nobody is wiping terminal data from the office."
Victoria pressed her back against the glass railing of the staircase, her breath coming in shallow, ragged pants.
The polished armor of her corporate dominance had completely disintegrated, leaving behind a desperate woman calculating her odds of survival.
"You can't arrest us based on an anonymous tip," Victoria hissed, her voice trembling despite her best efforts to sound authoritative.
"My lawyers will tear your department apart by morning. Richard, say something!"
Richard remained completely silent. His eyes were fixed on the doorway of the study where the phone kept ringing.
A muscle in his jaw twitched violently, and for the first time, Chloe saw a flicker of genuine fear cross her father’s hardened features.
It wasn't fear of the police, or fear of the accusations. It was something older, something deeply buried that was finally clawing its way to the surface.
Officer Davies hurried back from the hallway, his face pale in the dim light of the chandelier.
"Detective, you need to hear this," Davies said, holding up a small digital recorder he had pulled from his belt.
"The call was auto-forwarded from the master bedroom's secure line. It’s an encrypted voice memo set with a timer. It went off sixty seconds ago."
Miller stepped forward, his eyes narrowing. "Play it."
Davies pressed a button on the small device. For a second, there was only static, and then a familiar, clear voice filled the grand foyer.
It was Eleanor Vance.
“If you are hearing this message,” the recording began, her voice steady, crisp, and devoid of the frailty her husband and Victoria had claimed she possessed, “it means my heart has stopped, and Richard has already begun liquidating the estate.”
Victoria let out a muffled sob, sinking against the glass railing.
Richard took a sudden, violent step forward, but Detective Miller’s hand shot out, shoving him back against the marble pillar with a heavy thud.
“I leave everything,” Eleanor’s recorded voice continued, each word landing like a hammer blow, “every penny, every share, and this house—to my daughter, Chloe. And to the state prosecutor, I leave the bank account numbers for the offshore accounts Richard opened under Victoria’s maiden name.”
The recording clicked off, leaving the foyer in a stunned, suffocating silence.
Chloe stood frozen, the blood rushing in her ears, as Detective Miller slowly turned his head to look at Richard with a cold, knowing smile.
"Well, Mr. Vance," Miller said softly, clicking the handcuffs from his belt.
"It looks like your wife had the last word after all. Turn around and put your hands behind your back."
Richard didn't move. Instead, he slowly turned his head, looking past the police officers straight at Chloe with a terrifyingly calm expression.
"You think you’ve won, Chloe," Richard whispered, his voice dangerously low as the cold metal cuffs clicked into place around his wrists.
