Chapter 6 - The Basement Vault

The metallic click of the handcuffs echoing against the marble floor felt like a starting pistol in the tense silence of the foyer.
Detective Miller yanked Richard’s arm back, securing the restraints with practiced efficiency.
Victoria slumped entirely to the floor, her beige trousers staining against the dust near the base of the glass staircase, weeping openly now without any pretense of dignity.
"Read her her rights too, Miller," Richard said, his voice entirely devoid of panic as he glanced down at Victoria with utter contempt.
"She was the one who procured the veterinary compound from the clinic. I merely provided the signature."
Victoria’s head snapped up, her eyes wide with shock and betrayal.
"You lying bastard!" she screamed, lunging toward him, but Officer Davies intercepted her, pinning her arms behind her back with a firm grip as another set of cuffs snapped shut.
"Save it for the magistrate," Miller barked, guiding Richard toward the double doors.
He paused, looking back at Chloe, who stood paralyzed near the threshold.
"Miss Vance, you'll need to accompany us down to the precinct to formalize the statement and take possession of the residence. We'll have a forensic team sweep the property by dawn."
"The vault," Chloe whispered, her mind replaying her father’s parting words.
"What vault?"
Miller frowned, looking back at Richard.
"What is she talking about?"
Richard smiled—a cold, humorless stretching of the lips that didn't reach his deadened eyes.
"Ask her mother about the south wing sub-basement," Richard taunted as Miller nudged him forward out into the cold night air.
"Eleanor loved secrets more than she loved her own family. Let’s see if my sweet daughter has the stomach to open Pandora's box."
The heavy wooden doors swung shut, leaving Chloe alone in the massive foyer with only Officer Davies, who was standing guard over the sobbing Victoria.
The silence that rushed back into the house felt heavier now, charged with a dark, suffocating energy.
Chloe looked down the long corridor leading toward the kitchens and the old service quarters—an area of the house she hadn't visited since she was a child.
Her mother had always kept that heavy steel door bolted from the inside, claiming it was just an old storm shelter filled with antiquated records and obsolete estate ledgers.
"Miss Vance?" Officer Davies called out, pulling Victoria to her feet.
"Do you want me to wait with you while you call a locksmith, or are you coming down to the station now?"
Chloe didn't answer right away. She walked slowly toward the dark hallway, her high heels clicking softly against the marble.
She reached the end of the corridor where a heavy, fire-rated steel door sat flush against the wood-paneled wall, fitted with an antiquated digital keypad and a modern biometric scanner.
Her heart hammered against her ribs as she reached out a trembling hand, pressing her thumb against the scanner plate.
A soft red light blinked twice, followed by a low-pitched electronic chime.

A secondary screen flickered to life on the wall beside the door, displaying a blinking countdown timer set to exactly ten minutes, accompanied by a single flashing prompt asking for a six-digit security override code.
