Chapter 15 - Dawn Over the Estate

The first pale rays of dawn broke over the sprawling slate roof of the Vance estate, painting the eastern sky in brilliant shades of amber, rose, and gold.

The flashing red and blue lights of the police cruisers had finally been switched off, replaced by the quiet, methodical activity of forensic teams and federal investigators combing through the grounds.

Chloe stood on the front portico, wearing a thick wool blanket draped over her shoulders, her dry grey knit sweater and black jeans smelling faintly of lake water and mud.

The heavy wooden double doors stood wide open, welcoming the cool morning breeze into the pristine white marble foyer where this nightmare had begun less than twenty-four hours ago.

Detective Miller walked up the stone steps, holding a heavy manila envelope stamped with the state prosecutor’s official seal. He offered a warm, exhausted smile as he handed it to her.

"The federal judge signed the emergency asset freeze and trusteeship transfer just an hour ago," Miller said quietly.

"Thank you, Detective," she whispered, her voice steady and clear.

"What happens to the house now?"

Miller looked out over the sprawling manicured lawns stretching down toward the lake.

"That’s entirely up to you. Legally, you are the sole surviving heir and trustee of the estate."

Chloe turned around, stepping across the threshold into the grand foyer.

The crystal chandelier caught the morning sun, casting bright, dancing reflections across the white marble floors where Victoria had once stood in arrogant triumph.

She walked slowly toward the sweeping glass staircase, her hand trailing along the smooth wooden banister.

She didn't feel broken anymore. She felt stronger, tempered by the fire of betrayal and the enduring memory of a mother who had fought to her last breath to protect her legacy.

Chloe walked down the long corridor toward the west wing, pausing at the open doorway of the library where the floorboards had been ripped open.
