The next morning, Eleanor invited Victoria into her private office at the shelter. On the wall hung a faded, framed photograph of a young woman standing in front of a tiny, rundown food cart.
""That was me,"" Eleanor said. ""Fifty years ago. I was homeless. A kind chef gave me a bowl of beef stew and taught me how to make it. That stew built my empire. L’Étoile d’Or isn't about caviar and gold leaf, Victoria. It is about the sacred act of feeding people. Of making them feel seen."" For the first time in her life, Victoria felt a profound sense of shame. ""I'm sorry,"" she whispered. ""I'm so sorry I hit you.""
