Chapter 8: The Little Boy

The turning point came on a freezing Tuesday. A young boy, no older than eight, walked into the soup kitchen shivering, wearing a torn jacket. He approached the counter where Victoria was serving bread. He looked at her with wide, timid eyes. ""Excuse me, ma'am,"" he whispered. ""Can I have an extra piece for my mom? She’s sick outside.""
Victoria froze. She remembered a time when she was a little girl, before the greed consumed her, when she had empathy. Without thinking, she didn't just give him bread. She packed two large containers of hot stew, grabbed her own coat, and walked outside with the boy to help his mother. From the kitchen window, Eleanor watched and smiled.
