Chapter 8: The Trial Begins**

The New York State Supreme Court was packed with journalists, legal observers, and curious citizens as *The People v. Chloe Vance and Marcus Sterling* commenced.
Chloe sat at the defense table dressed in subdued navy, her high-priced legal team attempting to paint her as an overwhelmed spouse suffering from severe isolation and psychological strain.
When Evelyn took the witness stand, a hush fell over the entire courtroom.
Her silver hair was neatly pinned, her posture straight despite her age. She spoke without theatrical tears or malice, recounting the weeks of confinement, the locked doors, and the cruel words meant to break her spirit.
"Did you ever hate the defendant, Mrs. Vance?" the prosecutor asked.
Evelyn looked directly across the room at Chloe, whose eyes darted toward the floor.
"No," Evelyn replied clearly. "I pitied her. Because anyone who believes that power comes from cruelty has already lost everything that makes a human life valuable."

Jurors exchanged glances. In that single sentence, Evelyn stripped the defense of every excuse. The dignity of the victim completely overshadowed the arrogance of the perpetrators.
