Chapter 3: The Web of Betrayal**

Downstairs in the study, Chloe sat under the watchful gaze of two private security guards. The panic in her eyes had calcified into icy defiance.
Julian entered, dropping the thick legal binder onto the mahogany desk. The thump echoed like a gavel.
"Marcus Sterling," Julian said quietly. "How long?"
Chloe let out a dry, humorless laugh. "Marcus actually sees me, Julian. You married me like a trophy to show off at charity galas, then left me in this gilded mausoleum to play nursemaid to an old woman. Marcus offered a way out."
"By stealing her life's savings? By starving her?"
"We needed capital," Chloe hissed, leaning across the desk. "Marcus found a loophole in the offshore trust. All we needed was Evelyn's signature declaring mental incapacity, but the stubborn old woman refused to sign. She kept fighting me."
Julian felt a profound emptiness where his heartbreak should have been. It wasn't just betrayal of marriage; it was an absolute absence of basic humanity.
"The police are on their way, Chloe."
"On what grounds?" she scoffed, crossing her legs. "A domestic squabble? A bruise that a good lawyer will argue came from a fall? You have no hard financial proof Marcus moved anything."
"I don't need financial speculation," Julian replied, sliding his laptop forward. "Maria kept a journal of every date, time, and meal withheld. And the hidden camera in the study recorded you and Marcus forging these documents three days ago."
