By evening, the local authorities had escorted Chloe off the premises in handcuffs, her protests muffled by the flashing red-and-blue lights reflecting off the manor's limestone facade.
Julian sat in the quiet of his mother’s former bedroom on the first floor. The room had been cleaned, warmed, and filled with fresh lilies. Evelyn lay propped against plush pillows, sipping warm broth that Maria had prepared.
"Mom," Julian whispered, burying his face into her palms. "I am so sorry. I was blind. I was chasing deals, building an empire... and I left you in hell."
Evelyn stroked his hair with frail, calloused fingers. Her voice was faint, but her spirit remained unbroken. "You didn't know, Julian. Deceit dresses itself in very fine clothes."
"I should have seen through it. When you called me six months ago sounding tired, she said you were resting. I believed her."
"A good heart always assumes others have good hearts, my boy," Evelyn murmured gently. "Your father used to say that wealth without vigilance is just prey waiting to be taken. But your heart wasn't wrong to love. It was simply betrayed."
