Chapter 9: The Outside Threat

The search for the mysterious collaborator sent a wave of tension rippling through the entire Vance estate. David and his security team fended off the quiet night, reviewing hours of exterior camera footage captured by the high-resolution lenses mounted along the perimeter wall. Inside the main study, Marcus poured himself a glass of amber scotch, though he didn't drink it. He stared into the amber liquid, deep in thought, while Evelyn paced the Persian rug in her vibrant red dress, the diamond jewelry still resting heavily against her collarbone as a surreal reminder of the chaos.

"This isn't just about a local loan shark," Marcus said, breaking the heavy silence in the room. He looked up at his wife. "A random criminal doesn't know the intricate security layout of this house, nor do they care about staging an elaborate frame-job unless they have a specific agenda against this family."

Evelyn stopped pacing, turning to face him. "Are you saying someone is targeting us directly? Corporate retaliation?"

"It's a strong possibility," Marcus replied evenly. "My company has been in a fierce acquisition battle over the past three months. Competitors play dirty, but using my own home as a chessboard crosses a line."

Just then, the study door swung open without a knock. David strode into the room, holding the rugged tablet out toward Marcus. The screen was paused on a crisp, color-corrected still image taken from the western perimeter gate camera at midnight two days prior.

"We found him, Mr. Vance," David announced, breathing slightly heavier than usual. "Or at least, we caught a clear shot of the man who met Sarah by the service fence."

Marcus and Evelyn hurried over to the desk, peering down at the tablet display. The image showed a man standing just outside the wrought-iron security gate, half-shrouded in the shadows of an ancient oak tree. Though the lighting was dim, the camera's infrared enhancement caught the sharp contours of his face—a lean, hard jawline, a neat goatee, and a distinct scar running down the left side of his neck.

Evelyn gasped, stepping back as if she had been burned. "I know that face."

Marcus looked sharply at his wife. "You know him?"

"Not personally," Evelyn said, her voice dropping to a tense whisper. "That's Julian Vance. Your cousin."

The name hung in the air like a physical shockwave. Marcus’s face drained of color, his jaw clenching so hard a muscle twitched in his cheek. Julian Vance had been disowned by the family patriarch a decade ago following a massive corporate embezzlement scandal that nearly brought the Vance enterprise to its knees. He had vanished overseas shortly after, swearing vengeance against the family that had cast him out.

"Julian," Marcus repeated, the name tasting like ash in his mouth. "He's back."
