Chapter 2: The Digital Eye

The private security room smelled faintly of ozone and old carpet. It was a windowless sanctuary tucked away behind the main library, dominated by a sprawling array of monitors and recording equipment. Marcus Vance sat heavily in the ergonomic leather chair, his fingers steepled in front of his face. Evelyn stood directly behind him, her arms crossed tightly over her crimson dress, her foot tapping a rapid, impatient rhythm against the floorboards. Elena sat on a metal folding chair near the door, her hands tightly clasped in her lap, staring down at her black-and-white uniform as if she could scrub away the stain of suspicion with her sheer willpower.
On the central mounted television screen, the digital playback began. The timestamp in the corner glowed in bright green numbers, marking events from twenty minutes prior. The camera angle captured the quiet elegance of the upstairs hallway, bathed in the soft glow of wall sconces. For a moment, the screen showed empty space, the stillness of the estate undisturbed. Then, a figure entered the frame from the left.
Evelyn leaned in closer, her breath catching in her throat. The figure on the screen was unmistakably wearing the black-and-white dress and white apron of a household staff member. The grainy resolution could not entirely obscure the familiar posture and the slicked-back bun. The person on the screen moved with practiced familiarity, carrying the black designer handbag. With calculated efficiency, the figure reached inside the leather pouch, pulled out a handful of the expensive jewelry Evelyn had reported missing, and dropped them deep into the bag before abandoning it on the small console table just outside the master suite.
Elena gasped, a sound of pure horror escaping her lips. "That's... that's not me! Look at the way she walks! I was in the laundry room!"
Evelyn scoffed, turning sharply toward the young maid. "And who else wears that exact uniform in this house, Elena? You are the only maid on duty this wing today. Do you take us for fools?"
Marcus raised a single hand, signaling for silence. His expression remained grim, but a microscopic shift in his brow betrayed deep concentration. He leaned forward, using the mouse to pause the playback and zoom in on the suspect's hands. The lighting was poor, casting long shadows across the corridor, but the footage was undeniably damning at first glance.

"Let's not jump to conclusions just yet," Marcus said quietly, his voice devoid of warmth, yet analytical. "Let's review the earlier footage from the service staircase."
Elena exhaled a shaky breath, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. She knew she was innocent, but the digital eye seemed to bear witness against her with terrifying clarity.
