Chapter 13: The Intruder

The iron service gate by the rose garden clicked open with a faint, metallic groan that was instantly swallowed by the heavy night fog. A solitary figure slipped through the gap, moving with calculated stealth across the manicured lawn. The man wore a dark trench coat with the collar turned up against the damp chill, his stride purposeful and confident. He approached the rear service entrance of the mansion, pulling a small metal pick from his pocket.

Inside the dimly lit control room, Marcus, Evelyn, David, and Henderson watched the exterior feed on the main monitor. The infrared camera captured every fluid movement of the intruder as he bypassed the lock on the service door in less than ten seconds and stepped quietly into the mansion's lower hallway.

"He's inside," David whispered, his hand resting instinctively near his belt.

"Let him reach the main foyer," Marcus instructed, his voice ice-cold. "Give him enough rope."

The figure crept through the service corridors, navigating the dark hallways with an eerie familiarity that confirmed his deep, historical roots in the estate. He moved toward the central staircase, his footsteps making almost no sound against the thick carpeting.

Slowly, the man emerged from the shadow of the hallway archway into the grand foyer, bathed in the soft, ambient glow of the crystal chandelier overhead. He paused, lowering his collar. The sharp jawline, the neat goatee, and the distinct scar running down the left side of his neck were unmistakable under the bright lights.

Julian Vance smiled to himself, a triumphant smirk crossing his face as he looked up at the master staircase where his victory supposedly awaited. He reached into his coat pocket, pulling out a small velvet pouch meant to collect the stolen jewelry.

"Going somewhere, Julian?"

The deep, resonant voice echoed off the marble floor like a gunshot.

Julian froze, his smirk instantly evaporating. He spun around on his heel, his eyes widening in shock. Standing at the top of the grand staircase, illuminated by the sparkling chandelier, was Marcus Vance. Beside him stood Evelyn, her vibrant red dress contrasting sharply against the dark wood of the banister, radiating quiet, unyielding authority.

Julian’s breath hitched, but he quickly forced a cocky, defensive smile onto his face. "Marcus. I must say, I expected a bit more hospitality from my favorite cousin."

"You've worn out your welcome in this house a decade ago, Julian," Marcus replied, descending the stairs with slow, deliberate steps. "And trespassing to frame an innocent staff member is a new low, even for you."
