Chapter 12: The Bait is Set

The digital clock on the administrative desk glowed midnight. The estate was wrapped in an eerie, unnatural silence, the kind that precedes a violent storm. Sarah sat at her computer terminal, her hands trembling as she drafted the encrypted message dictated by Marcus and David. Every keystroke felt like a hammer blow against her conscience.

The plan hit a snag, she typed, forcing her fingers to remain steady. The theft was discovered, but the family blamed the maid and locked her away. I managed to secure the jewelry bags and hide them in the west greenhouse. If you want your leverage, you need to come get them yourself tonight. Use the service gate by the rose garden. It's unlocked.

She paused, her finger hovering over the send button. She looked up and saw Marcus standing silently in the doorway, his arms crossed, watching her every move with a stern, unyielding gaze. He gave a single, imperceptible nod.

Sarah pressed enter. The message zipped through fiber-optic cables, disappearing into the digital void toward an untraceable burner phone across the city.

"Done," Sarah whispered, her voice cracking as she leaned back in her chair, covering her face with her hands. "I sent it."

"Good," Marcus said, his voice devoid of pity, though fair in its judgment. "When this is over, Sarah, your brother's debt will be cleared by my legal team. But your employment with this family ends tonight. You will pack your things and leave the property by dawn."

Sarah didn't argue. She simply nodded, knowing she had escaped prison only through the mercy of a calculated trap.

Outside, the estate grounds slept under a blanket of heavy fog. Along the perimeter, David's security team moved through the shadows like phantoms, deploying motion sensors and securing every exit route. In the main hallway, Elena stood quietly beside Evelyn near the grand staircase—the very spot where the nightmare had begun hours earlier.

"Are you sure you want to stay for this, Elena?" Evelyn asked softly, her tone carrying genuine concern as she looked down at the young maid.

Elena straightened her white apron, her posture resolute, her eyes clear and unafraid. "I am, Mrs. Vance. I want to see the truth come to light. I want to know that my home is safe again."

Evelyn offered a small, respectful nod, the last remnants of their social divide melting away under the shared weight of the crisis. Together, they waited in the hushed, expectant dark of the grand foyer, watching the massive mahogany front doors like sentinels waiting for the dawn.
