Chapter 1: The Accusation

The crystal chandelier overhead cast a harsh, glittering light across the expansive mahogany foyer, illuminating the dust motes dancing in the tense air. Evelyn Vance stood at the top of the grand staircase, her tall frame rigid with fury. Her vibrant red fitted dress clung to her silhouette, the heavy diamond necklaces and earrings catching the light with every agitated breath she took. Her dark wavy hair cascaded over one shoulder, framing a face twisted in disbelief and rage. Below her stood Elena, the young household maid, trapped between the staircase and the polished entryway table. Elena’s black-and-white uniform, crisp with its stark white collar and apron, felt suddenly suffocating. Her hair was pulled back into a tight, neat bun that exposed her trembling chin and wide, terrified eyes.
"You stole my necklace! Give it back right now!" Evelyn’s voice echoed off the marble floor, sharp and cutting.
Elena flinched, her hands rising instinctively in a defensive gesture. "Ma'am, I did not take anything!" she whispered, her voice cracking under the sudden weight of the accusation. Tears welled in the corners of Elena’s eyes, threatening to spill over her flushed cheeks. She had worked in this sprawling estate for six months, taking pride in her meticulous labor, never giving anyone a reason to doubt her integrity.
Beside them, Marcus Vance stood like a monolith. At fifty, his tailored black suit and stern expression made him a formidable presence in the household. He watched the exchange with a measured, unblinking gaze, his hands clasped behind his back. He did not raise his voice, nor did he rush to judgment, but the air around him grew colder.
On the polished wooden table nearby lay the epicenter of the crisis: a black designer handbag, tipped aggressively on its side. Spilling out from its leather mouth like spilled guts were priceless heirlooms—gleaming pearls, tangled diamond chains, and heavy gold rings that caught the amber reflections of the hallway lamps. Evelyn pointed a manicured finger directly at Elena, her breath coming in shallow, angry gasps. The accusation hung in the air like a physical blow. Elena shook her head frantically, swallowing hard as a single tear traced a hot path down her cheek.
"I did not put it there, I swear," Elena pleaded, her gaze darting toward the side as if looking for an escape route that did not exist.

Marcus stepped forward, his leather shoes clicking softly against the floorboards. The tension in the room was palpable, thick enough to choke on. He looked from his furious wife to the weeping, defenseless young woman.
"Then let's watch the cameras," Marcus said sternly, his voice cutting through the panic.
