Chapter 8: Desperate Measures

The confession hung heavily in the sterile air of the administrative office, silencing the rising tide of anger in Evelyn’s chest. Marcus stepped closer, his stern expression unyielding, yet curiosity flashed in his dark eyes. He placed both hands flat on the mahogany desk, leaning down to meet Sarah’s tearful gaze.

"Who is going to hurt your brother, Sarah?" Marcus demanded, his voice dangerously low. "Explain yourself, and you had better tell the absolute truth."

Sarah trembled, sinking slowly into her chair as the weight of her deception finally crushed her. She pulled a crumpled tissue from her pocket, wiping at her eyes before speaking in a broken whisper. "It started six months ago. My brother, Leo... he got mixed up with the wrong people in the city. Gambling debts. Real loan sharks. They came to our apartment one night, demanding twenty thousand dollars or they said they’d break his legs. More than that."

Evelyn watched her assistant closely, her initial fury softening just a fraction into cautious skepticism. "And what does that have to do with my jewelry and framing Elena?"

"They told me I had to pay, or they would make an example of him," Sarah sobbed, her voice cracking. "I didn't have the money. My salary isn't enough to cover debts like that. Then... someone approached me outside the estate gates. Someone who knew I worked here. They said they could make my brother's debt disappear if I helped them access the master wing."

"Who?" Marcus pressed, stepping into her personal space. "Give me a name, Sarah."

"I don't know his real name!" Sarah cried out defensively, wringing her hands together. "He just called himself Vance's shadow. He knew everything about the house—the security blind spots, where Mrs. Vance kept her day-to-day jewelry, and how to access the staff lockers. He told me to steal the pieces, stage the bag in the hallway, and use Elena's badge to guarantee the blame fell on someone else so the police wouldn't look any deeper."

Elena, who had quietly followed David into the room and lingered near the door, gasped softly. The pieces of the terrifying puzzle were suddenly falling into place, revealing a much darker picture than a simple domestic theft.

"You used me," Elena said softly, stepping forward. Her voice wasn't filled with anger, only profound sadness. "You knew I worked hard to keep this job. You knew I had a family depending on the money I send home every month. And you didn't care if I went to prison."

Sarah looked over at Elena, her eyes filled with profound shame. She couldn't meet the young maid's gaze. "I'm sorry, Elena. I was desperate. I was trying to save my own family."

Marcus straightened up, his face hardening like stone. He turned to David. "Find out who has been contacting her outside these gates. Check the external perimeter cameras for anyone loitering near the service entrance over the past week."
