Chapter 3: Unraveling the Timeline

The blue light of the security monitors cast long, ghostly shadows across the walls of the private control room. Marcus Vance clicked the mouse again, rewinding the footage to forty-five minutes earlier, long before Evelyn had discovered her missing heirlooms. The timestamp rolled backward in a rapid blur of numbers until it settled at two-fifteen in the afternoon.
"Watch the movement on the lower service stairs," Marcus instructed, his voice low and even.
Evelyn leaned over the back of his chair, her diamond bracelets clinking softly with the movement. On the screen, the camera angle shifted to the narrow, utilitarian staircase used exclusively by the domestic staff to move between the basement laundry facilities and the upper residential quarters. The frame remained empty for several minutes, save for the rhythmic turning of a ceiling vent. Then, a figure appeared, climbing upward with a heavy canvas laundry basket balanced against one hip.
Elena leaned forward, her eyes straining against the glare of the monitor. "That's me," she murmured, her voice laced with sudden validation. "See? I was carrying the linens from the lower washroom up to the linen closet. I was down there for nearly an hour."
The timestamp in the corner verified her claim. The footage showed Elena entering the service stairwell at precisely two o'clock and emerging on the third-floor landing at two-twelve. During that exact twenty-minute window, the main hallway camera had captured the other figure—the one wearing the identical maid's uniform—slipping into Evelyn's dressing room.
Evelyn frowned, her arms uncrossing as doubt flickered across her sharp features. She looked from the screen to Elena, then back to the frozen image of the suspect. "If you were on the service stairs, then who the hell was walking down my private hallway?"
"I don't know, ma'am," Elena whispered, the tears returning, though this time they were fueled by a desperate need for the truth to be seen. "I swear to you, I never go into your private wing unless I am specifically called to clean. You have strict rules about that, and I have never broken them."
Marcus nodded slowly, the wheels in his mind turning behind cold, calculating eyes. He knew his estate's security protocols inside and out. The cameras were motion-activated, covering every square foot of the interior save for the private bathrooms and walk-in closets. Whoever had staged this setup knew the blind spots, or at least thought they did.

"Someone had access to a spare uniform," Marcus observed aloud, more to himself than to the two women standing behind him. He reached for his phone, dialing a short internal extension. "Security, report to the master wing immediately. Bring the digital logs for the biometric staff badges."
The trap was beginning to shift, but the identity of the true architect remained hidden in the shadows of the sprawling mansion.
