Chapter 7: Confronting Shadows

The silence in the administrative office stretched thin, laden with unsaid words and mounting suspicion. Evelyn held her ground, her tall frame imposing against the doorway, while Sarah stood frozen beside her desk, the nervous flutter of her pulse visible in the hollow of her throat.

"You've been managing the estate's petty cash and supply accounts for over a year now, haven't you, Sarah?" Evelyn asked quietly, her voice carrying a chilling edge of authority.

Sarah swallowed hard, her tongue darting out to wet her dry lips. "Yes, Mrs. Vance. You know I handle the day-to-day operational budgets."

"Then explain to me why you looked like you were hiding state secrets when I walked in," Evelyn countered, taking another slow step into the room. She gestured toward the minimized window on the desktop computer. "Open the spreadsheet, Sarah."

Sarah’s eyes widened in sheer panic. She shook her head, taking a half-step backward until the edge of the mahogany desk pressed against her lower back. "Mrs. Vance, I assure you, it’s just internal accounting. There are strict privacy protocols—"

"Open it," Evelyn commanded, her voice dropping an octave, brooking no argument.

Before Sarah could lunge for the keyboard to lock the terminal, the office door swung open wide, revealing Marcus and David standing in the threshold. Marcus’s face was a mask of cold fury, his heavy build filling the entryway. In David's hand, the rugged tablet glowed with a fresh set of data points.

"You don't need to ask her twice," Marcus said, his voice deep and resonant as he stepped into the room. He cast a piercing look at Sarah, who looked as though the ground beneath her feet had suddenly turned to ash. "We just finished tracking the digital signatures on the unauthorized badge access. The trail didn't lead to a random glitch, Sarah. It led straight to this terminal's IP address."

Sarah slumped against the desk, all pretense of innocence evaporating into the cold air of the room. The fight drained out of her posture, leaving her looking small and defeated. She covered her face with both hands, a muffled sob escaping her lips.

"I didn't mean for it to go this far," Sarah whispered through her fingers, her voice trembling violently. "I swear I didn't."

Evelyn crossed the room, standing directly in front of her assistant. "Mean for what to go this far? Stealing my jewelry? Framing an innocent girl? What kind of game are you playing in my house, Sarah?"

Sarah dropped her hands, tears finally spilling down her pale cheeks. She looked up at Marcus and Evelyn with eyes full of sheer desperation. "I didn't steal your diamonds to get rich, Mr. Vance. I took them because I had no choice. They were going to hurt my brother."
