Chapter 5: The Breakroom Blind Spot

The control room air felt stagnant as David tapped through the interface to locate the breakroom archive files. He dragged the progress bar back to one-thirty in the afternoon, maximizing the video window across the central monitor. The image shifted from the opulent master hallway to the utilitarian, fluorescent-lit staff breakroom. It was a sterile space furnished with a gray laminate table, a vending machine, and a row of metal lockers lining the back wall. Near the door sat the electronic charging dock, a multi-slot cradle where all staff members were required to dock their RFID badges during breaks.

"Here," David muttered, pointing a thick finger at the screen.

The timestamp showed one-forty-five. The breakroom was empty for a brief moment, the quiet hum of the refrigerator the only apparent activity. Then, the door clicked open. A figure stepped inside, moving with a casual familiarity that suggested they belonged there.

Evelyn leaned in closer, straining her eyes against the dim lighting of the control room. "Who is that? I can't see their face clearly."

The person on the screen kept their head lowered, avoiding the direct glare of the overhead camera's wide-angle lens. The individual wore the standard black trousers and white shirt of the general administrative staff—not a maid's uniform, but distinct enough to belong to someone on the payroll. The figure walked directly toward the charging dock, pausing for a fraction of a second before extending a hand.

Elena held her breath, her fingernails digging softly into the fabric of her skirt.

On the monitor, the person’s fingers hovered over the row of resting badges, plucked number 408 from its slot, and slipped it quickly into a pocket. The entire interaction took less than four seconds. The thief turned on their heel and walked out of the breakroom, the door swinging shut behind them with a soft pneumatic hiss.

"There," Elena whispered, tears of vindication springing fresh to her eyes. "See? I told you! Someone took my badge while I was busy in the laundry room!"

Marcus stared at the screen, his expression unreadable, though the muscles in his jaw tightened visibly. "Do we have a clear shot of their face when they exited, David?"

David shook his head regretfully. "The hallway outside the breakroom has an older camera model. The resolution is lower, and the lighting is poor at that hour. But we can track their movement downstream toward the administrative offices."

Evelyn’s anger shifted from Elena to the faceless intruder on the screen, a cold realization dawning in her eyes. "Someone inside my own house is trying to frame her. But why? Why target Elena?"

"That is the real question," Marcus said, his voice dropping to a dangerous register. He turned to David. "Pull the exit logs for every department head and administrative assistant on the estate today. No one leaves this property until I find out who has a motive to ruin an innocent girl's life."
