Chapter 6: A Web of Secrets

The administrative wing of the Vance estate smelled of fresh printer toner and polished wood. While Marcus and David combed through the digital access logs, Evelyn found herself walking the quiet corridors alone, her diamond-encrusted heels clicking a rhythmic dirge against the parquet flooring. The anger that had initially fueled her fiery accusation had slowly morphed into a nagging sense of unease. She prided herself on being a judge of character, yet someone under her very roof had orchestrated a sophisticated framing of a harmless young woman right beneath her nose.
Her mind drifted back to the staff roster. There were twenty-four employees living on the estate grounds, ranging from chefs and gardeners to housekeepers and administrative coordinators. Most of them had been with the family for years, fiercely loyal and well-compensated. Who among them would risk everything to steal a handful of jewelry and pin the blame on Elena?
As Evelyn approached the administrative office, she noticed the door to the assistant's workspace was cracked open an inch. A faint sliver of warm light spilled out onto the dark hallway carpet. She paused, her hand hovering near the brass doorknob. She could hear the soft, rhythmic clacking of a mechanical keyboard coming from inside, accompanied by the low murmur of someone speaking in hushed tones.
Evelyn pushed the door open silently, stepping into the room.
Sitting at the large mahogany desk was Sarah, the senior administrative assistant. Sarah had been in the family's employ for nearly four years, known for her quiet efficiency, immaculate appearance, and knack for keeping the household running like a Swiss watch. Tonight, however, Sarah's usual calm demeanor seemed fractured. Her shoulders were tense, and her dark hair was slightly disheveled around the temples.
Sarah gasped, spinning around in her ergonomic chair so fast that it squeaked loudly against the floor. Her fingers flew away from the keyboard, hovering defensively over the desk surface.
"Mrs. Vance! I... I didn't hear you come in," Sarah stammered, her voice uncharacteristically high. She quickly minimized an open window on her computer monitor, though not before Evelyn caught a glimpse of a financial spreadsheet filled with unfamiliar account numbers.
"Working late, Sarah?" Evelyn asked, her tone deceptively smooth as she crossed her arms over her vibrant red dress.
"Yes, just... wrapping up the weekly supply requisitions," Sarah replied, offering a tight, nervous smile that didn't quite reach her eyes. She reached out and subtly nudged a leather binder across the desk to cover a stray piece of paper.
Evelyn’s sharp eyes missed nothing. She stepped closer, her gaze dropping to the desk. "You look rattled, Sarah. Is something wrong?"

"Not at all, ma'am. Just a long day," Sarah said, standing up quickly to put physical distance between herself and the computer. Her hands were trembling slightly as she smoothed down the front of her tailored gray blouse.
Evelyn stared at her assistant, a cold spike of intuition piercing her chest. The financial spreadsheets, the late-night work, the sudden nervousness—it all formed the jagged edges of a puzzle that was beginning to look entirely unrelated to a simple missing necklace.
