Chapter 7 - The Edge of the Abyss

The thunderclap shook the glass windows of the high-rise boardroom, sending a deep, resonant vibration through the polished floor beneath their feet.

"Do not make a scene, Elena," one of the security guards rumbled, his heavy hand closing firmly around her light blue coat sleeve.

"Let her go," Chairman Vance ordered coldly, waving a dismissive hand as he walked over to the mahogany desk to inspect the charred remnants of the contract. "Let her walk out of her own accord. She will soon realize that the cold streets outside are far less forgiving than our boardroom."

Julian watched her with narrowed eyes, a lingering sense of unease gnawing at the back of his mind despite their apparent victory.

"Make sure she leaves the building through the loading dock," Julian instructed the guards. "I don't want her anywhere near the main lobby cameras."

Elena didn't look back at Julian or Clara. She straightened her posture, pulled her torn coat tightly around her, and walked past the guards with an eerie, composed dignity. The heavy double doors swung shut behind her with a dull, echoing thud, sealing her fate inside the corporate labyrinth.

Inside the boardroom, the tension slowly dissipated as Chairman Vance poured himself a glass of scotch from the crystal decanter on the sideboard.

"Well, Julian," Vance said, swirling the amber liquid in his glass. "The merger is secure, but the public relations nightmare of your messy divorce has yet to be managed."

"We have a press statement prepared for tomorrow morning," Clara intervened swiftly, regaining her composure as she stepped into the light. "We will frame it as a mutual, amicable separation due to irreconcilable lifestyle differences."

"See that you do," Vance warned, taking a slow sip. "If the media gets a whiff of financial foul play or corporate coercion, the stock price will plummet before the opening bell."

Julian nodded, walking over to the shattered window to look down at the street far below, where tiny cars crawled through the pouring rain. Suddenly, a strange sound caught his attention—a rhythmic, heavy pulsing coming from the private ventilation duct behind the conference table. Julian froze, his drink sloshing slightly over the rim of his glass as he stared at the dark metal opening.

"Clara," Julian whispered, his voice suddenly tight with panic. "Do you hear that?"
