Chapter 2 - The Red Light Secret

Clara froze, the red blinking indicator reflecting in her wide, dilated pupils like a drop of fresh blood.
"Julian," Clara whispered, her voice losing its previous triumphant edge as she dropped the shattered device onto the pristine marble floor. "Look at the screen. It was recording the entire conversation."
Julian’s sharp features tightened instantly, his slicked-back light brown hair catching the harsh fluorescent lights of the corporate atrium. He shoved past Clara, dropping to his knees beside the ruined phone, his gloved hands trembling slightly as he pressed his thumb against the cracked glass.
"Is the data backed up to the cloud?" Julian demanded, his voice dropping to a harsh, panicked rasp that echoed off the cold steel columns.
"I don't know," Clara hissed, her red sleeveless dress rustling sharply as she paced the perimeter of the empty lobby. "If that file uploads to the board of directors before midnight, our corporate restructuring fails, and we lose the entire merger."
Down the long, descending corridor, the faint metallic echo of Elena’s heavy fall seemed to linger in the air, though the lower floor remained completely empty and dark. Julian stood up slowly, wiping his palm against his dark blue suit pants as he stared down the empty escalator shaft. There was no sign of Elena, only a single pearl button torn from her light blue coat resting on the bottom metallic step.
"She couldn't have gone far in her condition," Julian muttered, his eyes narrowing as he scanned the emergency exit signs. "The security gates are locked from this side, but the service elevator in the basement is still operational."
"Then she is heading for the security control room," Clara realized, her face turning pale under her makeup. "If she reaches the master servers, she can broadcast the audio file to every stakeholder in the city."

Julian didn't hesitate. He grabbed Clara’s arm, pulling her toward the private elevator bank hidden behind the towering mahogany reception desk. They punched the override code into the digital keypad, the green light flashing once before the heavy steel doors slid open with a low, mechanical groan. As they stepped inside, the elevator car flickered once, plunging them into sudden, absolute darkness.
