Chapter 3 - Shadows in the Basement

The service elevator descended into the sub-level parking garage with a stomach-churning drop, the emergency lights casting an eerie, amber glow over Julian and Clara.

"The power network is fluctuating," Clara whispered, gripping the polished brass handrail so tightly her knuckles turned stark white. "She must have triggered the manual circuit breaker on the lower level."

"She is playing a dangerous game," Julian replied coldly, adjusting his tie as the car finally shuddered to a halt.

The doors slid open to reveal a cavernous, concrete-pillar parking garage where rows of luxury sedans sat silent and abandoned. The air was thick with the scent of exhaust and damp concrete, completely devoid of human presence except for a trail of wet footprints leading toward the exit ramp. Julian stepped out first, his leather shoes clicking sharply against the slick floor.

"Elena!" Julian called out, his voice bouncing off the concrete walls in a mocking echo. "You are only making this harder on yourself. Come out now, and we can negotiate."

There was no answer, only the steady dripping of a leaky water pipe somewhere in the distant shadows. Clara followed closely behind him, her eyes scanning the dark corners where towering support pillars cast elongated, twisted shadows.

"Stop calling out to her," Clara snapped, pulling a small silver keycard from her handbag. "We need to get to the main server hub before she locks us out of the corporate network permanently."

Suddenly, a sharp metallic clatter echoed from the far corner of the garage, near the private security office. Both Julian and Clara spun around, their breath catching in their throats as a heavy steel door slowly creaked shut in the gloom.

"She’s inside the server room," Julian whispered, breaking into a rapid run across the damp concrete.

He reached the heavy reinforced door and slammed his weight against it, but the electronic lock was fully engaged, glowing with a solid, unyielding crimson light. Clara rushed up behind him, her expression contorting in sudden horror as she pointed up toward the ceiling ventilation grate directly above the door.
