Chapter 12 - The Rising Tide

As Julian and Clara were dragged out of the executive boardroom in handcuffs, Chairman Vance adjusted his tie with an air of untouchable arrogance.

"Make sure my legal team handles the press statements," Vance instructed a junior executive who was cowering in the corner. "We distance the firm from their actions entirely."

The junior executive nodded frantically, clutching a tablet to his chest as Vance strode toward the private elevator accompanied by two federal agents who were merely verifying his identification before clearing him. To the authorities, Chairman Vance appeared to be the heroic whistleblower who had just uncovered a rogue operation within his own company.

Down in the flooded subterranean parking garage, the water level was rising rapidly, swirling around the abandoned luxury sedans as the storm drains backed up. Elena walked steadily up the emergency concrete ramp, her light blue coat soaked at the hem, clutching the master hard drive safely against her chest. When she finally reached street level, the cool, rain-washed air hit her face like a physical wave of pure liberation.

Parked directly outside the corporate gates was a sleek black sedan with its hazard lights flashing, and standing beside it was Detective Marcus Vance—no relation to the corrupt chairman, but a federal investigator who had spent years building a case against the firm.

Marcus stepped forward with an umbrella, shielding Elena from the torrential downpour as she approached the vehicle.

"Are you alright, Elena?" Marcus asked, his voice filled with genuine concern as he noticed her pale face and exhausted demeanor.

"I am," Elena replied, a faint, resolute smile touching her lips as she handed him the master hard drive. "Everything you need to dismantle their entire corporate empire is right here on this drive."

Marcus took the device with a grim nod, opening the car door for her. "You took an incredible risk going in there alone."

"It was the only way to ensure they couldn't hide the evidence," Elena said, sliding into the warm leather interior of the car and placing a protective hand over her belly.

As Marcus closed the door and moved to the driver's side, a sleek black police cruiser pulled up behind them, its lights flashing silently in the rain.
