Chapter 4 - The Empty Cage

Julian stared up at the ventilation shaft, realizing with a sickening jolt that the heavy metal grate had been unscrewed from the inside.

"She didn't lock herself in," Julian breathed, his face draining of all color. "She used the crawlspace to bypass the security checkpoint entirely."

"Where does that shaft lead?" Clara asked, her voice trembling as she clutched her red dress tighter around her shoulders.

"It leads directly to the executive boardroom on the top floor," Julian replied, his hands clenching into tight fists at his sides. "She is heading back to the corporate boardroom table where the original merger contracts are still sitting unsecured."

Without another word, Julian turned on his heel and sprinted back toward the service elevator, aggressively hammering the call button until the metal doors snapped open. Clara scrambled inside beside him, her breathing coming in ragged, shallow gasps as the car began its rapid ascent back to the heights of the corporate tower. The digital floor numbers ticked upward in a blur, each passing second bringing them closer to a confrontation they could no longer control.

When the elevator finally reached the top floor, the doors parted to reveal a scene of absolute devastation. The high-rise corporate office boardroom was completely ransacked, heavy leather chairs overturned, and shattered glass scattered across the expensive Persian rug. At the center of the room, standing beside the massive mahogany conference table, was Elena. Her light blue coat was stained with dust and dried blood, but her posture was rigid, fierce, and unbroken. In her hand, she held the original, signed merger documents, hovering dangerously close to the open flame of a decorative fireplace.

"Step back, Julian," Elena warned, her voice cutting through the silent room like a sharp blade.

"Elena, you don't know what you are destroying," Julian pleaded, taking a cautious step forward with his hands raised. "Those papers represent millions in corporate assets. We can talk about this like civilized adults."

"There is nothing left to talk about," Elena replied coldly, her eyes locking onto Clara, who stood frozen in the doorway. "You traded my life for a corporate signature. Now, watch it burn."
