Chapter 10 - The Subterranean Tremor

The sudden seismic shock threw Julian off balance, sending him crashing hard into a rack of blinking server towers.

Sparks showered down from the ceiling as electrical cables shorted out, plunging the subterranean server room into pitch-black darkness save for the emergency backup lights.

"What was that?" one of the security guards shouted, stumbling backward as water began to gush from a ruptured pipe overhead.

"The storm has caused a structural failure in the foundation," Elena stated calmly, stepping past the dazed guard toward the open exit corridor.

Julian scrambled to his feet, wiping soot and blood from his forehead as he watched Elena slip through the doorway into the flooding parking garage.

"Stop her!" Julian screamed, coughing from the thick plume of smoke rising from the short-circuited servers. "Don't let her leave the building!"

The security guard rushed after Elena, but as they reached the garage exit ramp, a massive slab of concrete broke loose from the ceiling, crashing down directly in front of them with a thunderous roar. A thick cloud of dust and debris billowed into the air, completely blocking the exit and trapping Julian and the guards on the inner side of the cave-in.

"Elena!" Julian yelled into the choking dust, pounding his fists against the impassable wall of fallen concrete.

There was no reply, only the sound of rushing water and the distant wail of police sirens echoing faintly from the street above.

Back on the top floor, Chairman Vance and Clara watched from the shattered boardroom window as flashing red and blue lights began to flood the corporate plaza below. Federal investigators and police cruisers were already surrounding the building, their lights casting eerie geometric patterns across the glass facade.

"The federal marshals are downstairs," Clara whispered, her voice cracking as she clutched her ruined red dress around her trembling body.

Chairman Vance did not panic; instead, a cold, calculating smile slowly spread across his aging face as he reached into his jacket pocket.

"Let them come," Vance murmured smoothly, pulling out a small, encrypted burner phone. "Julian and Clara took the fall for the merger. We simply need a new scapegoat."
