Chapter 5 - Flames of Retribution

The corner of the heavy paper contract caught fire, the orange flame licking upward with alarming speed and casting wild shadows across the polished boardroom walls.
"No!" Clara shrieked, lunging forward with reckless desperation to snatch the burning document from Elena's hand.
Elena sidestepped with effortless precision, letting Clara stumble past her and trip over the edge of the overturned leather chair. Clara hit the floor hard, tearing the delicate fabric of her red dress against a sharp brass leg as curses spilled from her lips. Julian rushed past Clara, his eyes fixed entirely on Elena, his expression twisting from desperate pleading into dark, unadulterated rage.
"You are ruining everything we spent a decade building!" Julian shouted, lunging forward to tackle Elena away from the open fireplace.
Elena braced herself, holding the burning contract high above her head as Julian’s hands wrapped around her waist with brutal force. The struggle was fierce, a violent tangle of limbs and shredded fabric against the backdrop of glittering city lights visible through the floor-to-ceiling glass windows. With a final, desperate heave, Elena twisted her body and shoved Julian backward, sending him crashing into the heavy glass coffee table.
The glass shattered into a thousand glittering shards under Julian’s weight, cutting his hands and tearing his expensive dark blue suit. He groaned in pain, clutching his bleeding forearm as he glared up from the floor with pure venom in his eyes.
"You think burning these papers saves you?" Julian hissed through gritted teeth, blood dripping onto the ruined rug. "The digital copies were synchronized to the main server an hour ago. The board already approved the transfer."
Elena stopped moving, the burning paper dropping from her fingers to sizzle out on the marble hearth. Her face went pale as she looked down at Julian, realizing the horrifying truth of his words.
"You already executed the final transfer," Elena whispered, her voice barely audible over the hum of the HVAC system.
May you like
"Yes," a familiar, chilling voice echoed from the open double doors behind them, making all three of them freeze instantly.
